Hey all,

Can anyone suggest a good place to get 4 wheel laser alignment done properly by someone who knows what they are doing? Preferably somewhere not too far from s. wales. I'm reluctant to take it to the OPC after recent experience of phoning their service/parts dept and being told by the guy that he didnt know what teardrop mirrors were!!!

Cant help with the location but thats shocking about the teardrop mirrors, and he clearly hasnt worked there long. Did you explain to him that tear drop mirrors were named as such, that when you need a replacement, you call him, he quotes the price, you cry a lot. They go with the teardrop replacement clutch, the bawlyoureyesout RMS fix, and the trulydistraughthiccupinducingfloodsoftearsenginesgonepopwithnowarranty engine replacement (actually those last 2 are speciall 996 products!!)

It was a Saturday and he was the only person working that day. And he was an apprentice!! I had to tell him that a 1991 911 also known as the 964! At least the mirror gaskets were only £1.50 each so no tears shed...

Hi,

I'm surprised that you had problems at your local OPC (Penarth Road ?).

However, after a totally useless 4 wheel laser alignment at a local tyre dealers on my sons' Honda CRX Del Sol we looked around for a better option.

Ended up in Hereford.

Phone first, they are very knowlegeable and helpfull.

They did a first class job, provide a print-out of geometry as found, limits and geometry as set, and also sold my son a set of Pirellis at a fair price.

How bizarre, 2 cars ago I had a Honda CRX Del Sol and when I had it I remember them saying that one of the only other cars that needs four wheel laser allignment is a Porsche 911, and today I have just had my Porsche 911 done!

And then in the thread talking about laser allignment someone actually mentioned the Del Sol!

I had mine done at Jeff Fowkes in Ibstock for £80 ish, and also a set of Pirelli p-zero rossos for £568 and they seem to have done a brilliant job, the car feels brand new to drive and feels so solid.

My one bad side with reference to this experience was that when I turned up to collect it, it wasn't there! When I asked if it had been nicked, the response was "No, Steve's taken it out on a road test, but wow he has been gone quite a while!"

Not what you want to hear! I swear he put 20 miles on it!

Other than that they seem to have done a good job. And I love the red p-zero written on my tyres, they're worth every penny just for that. Simple things!

I too can't give a recommendation for a place in Justin's area but I can definitely recommend getting it done properly (I used my local specialist in Cheshire).

Up until last week I found that my car tracked badly, especially on poorly surfaced back roads. It would follow every contour and if it hit a bump, depression or piece of repair tarmac, at speed, it would physically jump sideways. It would squirm alarmingly under heavy braking. Un-nerving to say the least :eek:
. I knew I had to get it sorted with our upcoming 911UK trackday and I was beginning to worry that I had big suspension issues even though the car had new lowering kit fitted by the previous owner only 12 months ago.

The alignment was a 2 hour job plus test drive and cost me 100 notes. Well what a difference. The handling has been transformed. The car soaks up the bumps, feels agile and light and stays flat when I put the anchors on.

Apparently there was nothing wrong at the back and usually there is not much to go wrong there unless either trailing arm gets a big biff (and I'm told no easy or subtle adjustments like there are on more modern 911s). This is a good job because mine is too low to fit on the alignment clamps on the rear wheels without the car being jacked up. However the front was a mess. In particular, the toe-in was 10 mm outside of the accepted tolerance. When this was all rectified, my man proclaimed that I'd still experience some 'tracking' on bad roads because they all do but that,in his opinion, it now drives as good as any standard C2 should.
