I hope someone can give me some tips?

I recently aquired my first 911 it's a 1983 3.0cc sc, my pride but so much a joy!.

After a week she has developed a oil leak, looks like its coming from the oil cooler? but it drips on to the exsarst/heat exchanger and smokes badly.

Can anyone tell me the best way to remove as i am having prob's with the flange nuts so to remove the heat exchanger!

hi there the heat exchanger nuts will snap you will need to use some heat on them .welding bottles do not even think about trying to undo them without heat as they will snap off in the head

I might be barking up the wrong tree as it were but:

As this 'leak' developed only one week after purchasing the car and you are new to 911's, have you been topping up the engine oil level?

Measuring the oil level using the correct procedure is vital if overfilling is to be avoided. It is all too easy to overfill and cause oil to run down onto the exhaust once the car is one the move.

If you have topped up the oil tank, take a read of the handbook instruction or do a search on this forum.

Welcome Steven,

My mechanical expertise goes about as far as filling the washer bottle! I generally leave anything involving spanners etc to specialists...

Enjoy the car!

Robert.

Welcome to SC ownership Stephen!!

It could be your oil return tubes that are leaking if you are getting oil dripping onto your heat ex's. Quite a simple job, the new return tubes are telescopic and its just a case of ripping the old out and replacing and expanding the new into place - there are loads of articles on tinternet about this.

I can heartily recommend Wayne Dempsey's 101 projects for Porsche 911 book - its a godsend!!!

As Sid has rightly said, if the nuts are jammed solid, a bit of heat would help with some gentle persuasion or try soaking them with a load of WD40 overnight.

These are great cars and my 911 was my first step into Porsche ownership, there will be times when owning them is frustrating but it is easily cancelled out by the big grin you get when you plant your right foot to the floor and hear that flat 6 barking!!!

Get that Book, its the best £20 you'll spend.

Thanks for the info!!

I have topped up the oil as it seemed low? but the manual says the engine should be running at opt temp, this i have done but the smoke only seemed to start after this was done.

Time to drop some oil out I think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again Guys!!!

Or kick back and watch the World Cup and worry about it in July

All is now well with the smokin Targa!!!!

Dumped the oil out this morning and filled up to the correct level, and what do you no, she's stopped smoking!!!!!!

mind you there was 3.5 liters to much in it, so after watching England win 1-0 (but only just?) took her for a spin around the back lanes.

Roof out, sun blazin, what could be better!!!!

Thanks Jo for the info

Stephen,

Checking oil level on 911's is unique.

Not only must the oil be at full temperature, but you must actually have the engine running when you check the oil level by the dipstick (and the gauge should also show the level). Oh, and it must be on level ground. If you miss any one of these things you will get a false reading...and don not worry what the gauge shows while you are driving!

Did you by any chance fill 'er up while the engine was turned off?
