I have noticed a small amount of (apparently) engine oil in the expansion tank of my 2001 Boxster S. There is not a lot, but it is proving difficlut to get rid of. Perhaps the previous owner mistakenly put some oil in the expansion tank, but if not, what could it be ?

Steve,

You probably realize by now that (as a Boxster owner) you need to be pretty thick-skinned to come on this 911 forum asking tech questions.

Don't worry, its all in jest of course....thats the good news...now for the bad news....oil in your expansion tank is potentially very, very bad news and could mean your engine is f*cked!!! Sorry to be so brutally honest, but you need to go to either a Porsche dealer or (preferably) a good independent expert to have them look at it immediately...don't ignore this and carry on driving...you may be able to lessen the damage if you act now.

Good luck,

Marc

I know that water in oil means blown gasket. So I guess oil in water means the same thing? Basically there's a commnication between the two very separate compartments in an engine!

Long live air-cooled!

Air cooled = communication between oil and atmosphere with no safeguards and instant detonation
