From my last service on the 993 it states Shell Helix was used. Engine has Mobil 1 stickers on it form the service before/dealer.

What do others recommend using in these varioram blocks circa '97 and with what sort of change interval for a car that doesn't get used Mon-Fri?

Go into the 993 section of the Porsche Club GB forum and there are some technical articles, including one on oil. It'll tell you all you need to know.

Basically, as long as it's fully synthetic and of the right spec it'll be fine. Helix and Mob 1 are both OK. I've got Mob 1 in mine, and I'm v happy concerning oil consumption.

Morning Matthew,

I've just had my '96 varioram serviced, and used 10w 40 Magnatec semi synthetic- specialist told me there was no particular advantage for normal road use in using a 0w 40 synthetic as it costs more and tends to find holes to leak out of in older engines.

Get the oil changed once a year or every 12k miles at the minimum.

Mobil 1 seems to be remakably hard to come by in these parts. There are no Mobil filling stations locally, and nor are there any accessory shops. Where's a good source for this stuff?

reply that the Oil man send me..

Firstly Mobil 1 0w-40 is a good oil as its a PAO, proper synthetic. The OEM recommendation seems to be 5w-40 but the difference is the 0w test which is down to -35 degC. (5w is -30 degC) You can use either without problems. Could you buy a better oil? Well again tricky, from a synthetics perspective, esters are better as they are surface-active (electrostatically attracted to metal surfaces) this means that a protective layer is there at all times, even during that crucial start-up period. This helps to protect cams, gears, piston rings and valve train components, where lubrication is “boundary” rather than “hydrodynamic”, i.e. a very thin non-pressure fed film has to hold the surface apart. Even crank bearings benefit at starts, stops or when extreme shock loads upset the “hydrodynamic” film.

so WHO would be my Ester Oil alternatives ? assuming Mobil 1 is not an Ester... is that correct ? Yes. Porsche Approved - Silkolene PRO S 5w-40

then Halfords is the best shop source of Mobil 1, although that's at top retail price..

worth checking prices at Opie ?

I got my Mobil 1 from Halfrauds - far cheaper than anything from a filling station. But I needed it in a hurry. Bound to be cheeaper somewhere. Opie Oils seems a good outfit.

Can only recommend what I've inherited:

Mobil 1

For sure nowt wrong with Mobil, also consider Shell Helix and good old Castrol Magnatec.

had oil leaking experinces from Mobil 1, but it varies car to car.. mine never liked the stuff, for others it's fine !

I don't know if it is the same in the uk but in Portugal BP have taken over Mobil and Mobil 1 is now BP 7000(in a gold container). I am assured by the Porsche dealers it is the same.

Thanks for all that - guys - you've certainly enlightened me a bit on oil (Coming from the world of Caterham's recently its been slightly different matter for me in recent years as they have their own range of re-badged Comma synthetics).

I will seek out one of the recommended Mobil1/BP7000, Silkolene's and may top-up with Shell Helix for now as it looks like that's what in the car from its last service.

I use Mobil 1 15w/50 grade, recommended by Strasse in Leeds for the 993 engines. The engine doesn`t suffer from any leaks and oil consumption is only about 2L over the 5000 miles between services.
