Smoke from the heater

Anyone ever experienced smoke from the heater vents on a 993 shortly after start up? It's happened twice now. If I haven't driven the car for a couple of days (a sin in itself I know), after 2 or 3 minutes a puff of greyish blue smoke comes out of the main vents - doesn't seem to come out of the side vents. It's pretty disconcerting because you immediately think you've got a fire; but then it clears itself.

I can't distinguish what the smell is, but probably burnt oil so it's like oil has somehow found it's way into the heat exchanger.

Any body got any ideas as I'm not sure I wnat a smoked glass interior!

I had the same thing on my old 964. Oil had and was finding its way onto the heat exchangers. Specialist found very small weep, but part of it was also my fault due to spillage when trying to prevent my cufflinked sleeve getting rotorvated during oil top up

It sounds like the same thing but one should not have leaks on the bullet proof 993

Thanks Hendo, you may well be right - I too had a slight spillage whilst trying not to get my nicely pressed white cuffs and cufflinks entangled in the big whirlygig things. I'll keep my eye (and nose) on it.

I would suggest that the heat exchangers are on the way out.

It is likely that the exhaust cavity has ruptured, allowing smoke for the engine into the warm air cavity that surrounds it.

I would suggest that you take a close look at this as I guess you could end up blowing nice warm exhaust fumes into the car!

Thanks Nobby - I'll check it out. Do you know if there is any way I can test/look at the exhaust cavity to see if it has ruptured?

It's difficult because if the exhaust is letting gas into the warm air chamber and the outer of the exchanger is sound, you cannot see the problem. The only way I can think of is to remove the exchanger, make a blanking plate for 1 end and make another blank with a hose tail on it for the other end. Pressre test the exhaust to see if you have any losses.

There's probably an easier way though!

Cheers for the info Nobby, much appreciated. I'll let you know how I get on.
