993 Headlamps AAARRRRRRGH!

Sorry, but I need to vent.

I have just spent 1 hr trying to change the dipped beam headlamp on my 993. A simple enough task I hear you say, dear reader. Ohhhhh no.

There is evidently a problem with the crappy wire clip thingy which holds the bulb in as it still won't work. Then I took out the other lamp unit to have a look at that, didn't dismantle it, just looked at it and put it back in. And guess what, that now doesn't work either. So the car is now completely useless for driving after dark until I can find time to get to a specialist. Just to change a bl00dy bulb.

I hate which ever component company made those light units with a deep seated loathing, and hope the designer spends eternity bending poxy little bits of wire for absolutely no benefit whatsoever, which is what I've just done.

Deep breaths, la-la-la-la, where's my medication.

indeed I have been there...more in & out or push a bit harder till they work !

you wait till you actually have to adjust the beam setting...... the unit is in & out at every turn !

Odd, I spent about 5 mins per side changing the bulbs for silverstars .... and thought what well engineered cars 993's were .... until the bulk of glass in the dipped beam design minimises the xenon benefit... mark

I changed by bulbs and had one of the clips come undone. I had to fish around in the lamp unit with artery forceps to get it out.

However, there is an official Porsche improved clip that is far more secure.

Sundeep, you mentioned adjusting the beam settings? I've recently changed the bulbs (with increased W's) and now find that one headlight is higher than the other, havn't had time to sort it out yet - any tips, before I start ??

Rob, when you push the unit back, make sure the plug lines up with the socket properly before pushing it in. I made that mistake once and thought I broke something when the headlamp stopped working. The socket mounting can be a bit loose and may not line up.

a lot of patience and enusre that you know which way each adjusting screw goes.... if you are lucky enough to be able to adjust the beam with te lamps in place then it is a lot easier, otherwise it is a lot of in & out then adjust, then in & out then adjust... :(

but get xenons fitted as per my recent post and for £200 they are a bargain !

Vaseline !!!!!

I had my headlamp out to replace the windscreen washer which sprung a leak. But after putting the headlamp unit back in nothing would work; I could not get that connection to make contact - and I must have tried about 10 times. But with a little vaseline applied to the plug and socket, it then worked first time !

Robert,

Try this: Take out the headlight assembly. Reach into the gaping hole and slide the female part of the connector from it's housing. Next pull the connector out of the hole (hopefully if your car is unmolested it'll have enough length). Then slip the connector onto the back of the headlight and push back into the hole making sure not to trap the wires.

I had much frustration like you until I realised that this way is a whole lot easier. I did it about 6 months ago to replace a frighteningly expensive xenon bulb and they've been fine since.

Hope it helps,

Don.

Don,

Thank you- funnily enough, I took it to a local Porsche specialist in the end (Tony Wright, Wrightune in wallingford who I can most heartily recommend) who tested everything before establishing it was the multipin connectors. In the end, they pulled the connectors out and fitted them as you suggest above before slipping the light units back in. Job done!

At least I know I am not entirely incompetent, as my failure to even change a light bulb had been the subject of much merriment from my wife!

Cheers

Robert.
