Depreciation on 996 C4S Tip?

Hi

6 months ago I bought an 03 Porsche 911 (996) 4S Tiptronic from a Porsche dealer for £58k. I've done 10,000 miles bringing it up to a total of 37k miles.

Last weekend I went in to a BMW dealer to look at an M3 because I'm doing many more miles than I ever expected due to work. They looked at my Porsche and took it for a drive and said it was in amazing condition and probably wouldn't need any prep work on it. They then called 3 Porsche dealers asking for a trade price - all figures came in at £40-45k. The car has most extras on the options list and is in great condition.

Should I have expected this or am I right to feel a little stung? I was expecting to get around £50k from a dealer (and maybe ~£52k private) after only 6 months?

sounds like another case of OPS (S is for stealers!!) sell it privately if you can

check out this web site as regards to 996 prices or auto trader, also top marques mag is a good refrence if you fancy a read.

All dealers put a pretty big mark-up on Porsches they sell. That goes for independents as well as OPCs. I'd have thought that when you bought the C4S for 58K, the dealer paid between 50 and 53. And that was 6 months and 10K miles ago!

Why not just do the miles in the 996? I can think of worse cars to do the miles in!

You've taken the value hit already, and you'll probably take another hit buying the M3.

I'd love to do the miles in the Porsche, I do prefer the drive to that of an M3. It was fine to use this car when I'm working away for a few days at a time but increasingly I'm working away for longer periods (1 month+) which means I have to transport a lot more stuff, the Porsche just doesn't have the space.

I'm also considering buying a cheap (£3-5k) car for work, given the hit I've taken it could be a better option. But then again, I didn't buy a Porsche to leave it sat in the garage at home the whole time...

The feeling I'm getting from this forum is that this kind of hit on the residuals is normal??

keep the car a little longer. with the disappointing look and lack of turbo mechanicals of the new 4cs 997, the 996 model will become more desirable

Judging by the picture, I'd hang on to it and buy a cheap runner, but then I'm naturally biased. Even if you drive it on weekends, you'll still get long term enjoyment from it, mileage will slow down, and longer term so will depreciation against similar aged cars IMHO. 15-18 grand hit is only a hit if you lock it in. Added to that you'll suffer the same thing again in buying an M3 and chucking loads of miles at that. I'd look at every luggage/baggage option to figure out how I can get the most in the car. If your occupation is veterinary surgeon with a specialism in giraffes then I see where you're coming from. I did 14 days around europe in a 964 cab with mrs Hendo and we still had enough space to pick up various wines and chamagnes along the way!!! - you know it makes sense!!!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I will hang on to it for another year or so. Luckily I'm working in Geneva now most of the time so I can leave the car at home and the mileage won't be going up much from now...



Charles: Are you sure about the 996 C4S becoming more desirable?
