After reading some of the problems many 996 owners have had with replacing engines and having to pay 10k plus to fix, does anybody know of a UK Insurance policy that cover porsches? I have found a couple in the US but nothing over here, apparantly from reading these threads the new warranty Porsche are offering doesnt cover some of the major faults which are ocurring with the 996, (the turbo and GT are not affected as they are primarily 993 blocks), so most worrying as my warranty expires in 9 months, and dont need no scarey 10 grand bill if the worst was to happen, infact already thinking about part exchanging my 4s cab for a turbo dont know which yet Mmmmm the agony of choice.

unlikely.. warranty renewal would be your only cover....

but remember although 1 in 4 have had some type of PMS related problem it has only been the unlikely minority of that 1 in 4 who have had to get new engines.. but then based on the numbers of 996's sold, there have been a fair few that have been very unlucky

The Porsche Extended warranty should cover engine failure

£725 a year up to 11 years old and 110,000 miles,

you can pass it on to the next owner when you sell it privately

all my 911's have this cover

Hi Rob

My current pride and joy was sourced from a german OPC and to complicate matters further, is an American spec car as the first owner was an American director at Porsche AG. Porsche warranty is now pan-european so no problems there. Being a march 03 car, the initial warranty wound off at the end of last month. I didnt have to have the 111 point check done as it was within original warranty. The extension to the warranty is a straight forward pay your £700 odd quid, plus vat and its extended for another year. I will only have to pay for the 111 point check in future if I have a specialist do the servicing rather than OPC. A car can be returned to extended warranty even if the original has lapsed by paying the hundred odd quid for the hundred odd point check, plus any remedial work nevcessary to bring it up to spec. The extended warranty can be maintained for up to 9 years old or 125k miles. Tonbridge OPC been nothing but polite and helpful and I've had no issues on 'well its imported mate'. When I asked them to get me a copy of the PCM2 manual in english, they got me the 'American English version' from PCNA rather than the the UK one to keep in line with the production model. Having read most posts on the topic of OPC's though, I would say that Lindbrook Tonbridge are the exception rather than the rule in terms of customer service.

thanks fellas, but still a bit unsure of the wording SHOULD cover engine failure, maybe you can explain the PMS problem and why is it people are having to pay 10k plus for replacement engines does this mean their cars had no OPC warranty because for the sake of 700 hundred odd quid, it dont make sense not to have it. ps having sleeples nights now cant stop thinking about the engine going bang,im going to replace my oil this weekend and every 3000 miles from now on,someone please assure me these cars are as good as i thought they were as i have been proper scaremongerd into taking it easy especially round bends (prob not a bad thing) for the last few days...honestly!!

Hi all

I am about to take delivery of a 1999 996 cabrio Tip S and you lot are scaring the hell out of me! i am going to get the 111 point inspection and porsche warranty included in the deal but what happens after 12 months?

Also, can anyone tell me what actual proportion of 996's has suffered engine failure.

cheers

Hi zabbo

have you read the DRs thread?.i dont think anybody knows exactly how many have gone pop except porsche, but i was a very happy bunny upuntil i started to read about these problems on this and other forums, from what iv read it seems the early 996s have had the main problems, apparantly some of these have been fixed by some sort of mods,so why didnt porsche recall these cars!! however late 996s still have a problem and there are early indications that the 997 which i think uses the same engine has got similar faults.

The only advice i seem to be getting to try prevent this from happening is to change your oil every 3000 miles or 6 months and make sure of correct mix of water/coolant this is supposed to be very important.... or strap yourself up for a 996 turbo!!! as its got a 993 block blah blah blah

What im still not sure of is if the car has not been raced or tracked and you have the extended warranty that is available, are any of these people still having to pay for new engines for any reason?,i dont think the DR on his thread had a warranty i think it just run out,has anybody out there actually had to pay out for a new lump and if so how come you didnt have a warranty is it not worth the money? i cant get my head round why supposedly so many people have paid out etc but they never had the warranty in the first place,700quid peace of mind...sh*t im starting to sound like a British Gas man again

Cheers Rob.

Good to know I'm not panicking on my own! To be honest, I`ve already made up my mind that I want the car and thats not going to change. I guess nobody would buy these cars if they didnt feel the same unwavering determination.

The challenge for me now is to just try and minimise the risk as much as possible. Porsche have inspected the car and found some faults like leaky oil seal, leaky oil separator, worn anti-roll bar bushes. These need to be fixed before it can have an official Porsche warranty, which i am going to buy.

I spoke to AFN Reading about the warranty and specifically asked if the warranty would cover a catastrophic engine failure. They said it would providing the failure wasnt due to abuse such as over-revving/racing etc. This has to be good eniough for me as if i go on like this i will never get the flipping car!

One more thing. I know i will likely get shot down in flames for saying this by someone with far greater knowledge, but an it seems that a lot of the failures seemed to occur in cars with 20K or less on the clock. Would it be over simplistic to suggest that if an engine is good it will reach 50-60K and beyond comfortably with the correct maintenance record. So would it be better to look for a good example with this sort of mileage on the clock? Just a thought.

zab

Zabbo/Rob,

i am in exactly the same position in that i have been looking into buying a 996 for a good 9 months now. i recently have virtually given up as i am extremely concerned about the rms and being stung for a huge service bill. i have even taken it as far as to start test driving an audi S4..... its not the same though. I am off to look at a 2001 51 facelift car this w/e which i would put thru a 111 check. This car currently has less than 20k miles as well!!! i will let u know what happens if i take it to an opc for checking and what the tell me about the warranty in the event of an engine going pop!

i joined the porschegb club and its exactly the same in those forums - alot of people are concerned with the engine oil leaks!

good luck with your searching
