Any advice gratefully received.......

Finally decided that its time to get a 911, however new to the world of Porshes so maybe someone can tell me if I'm going wrong.

Been looking at a few and have found a 1985 supersport, Guards red with black leather. Its had a serious amount of restoration and is a fabulous looking car. I've looked at and driven several others and this seems to have the best clutch/gearbox. My main concern is the mileage 96k and no engine rebuild.....how bad is this? I'm trying to get a PPI with compresion test.

The big question is - is £16,500 too much?

Many thanks

Gary

Mileage is a pretty grey area and shouldn't be the main concern in pure numerical terms. You may find a car with 100k motorway miles that is absolutely like new whereas a 50k car used round town could be ready for a top-end rebuild. Find out what you can about previous owners and how it has been used.

A compression test won't tell you the full story - it's a useful guide to the state of the engine, but won't tell you if the valve guides are worn. You can only tell this from a slightly unscientific study of whether the car blows white smoke on power-off (eg on down shifts etc.) I would have thought that £16500 is fairly top money for a pre G50 gearbox car (not that that should put you off in itself). Guards red is more difficult to sell these days, but if everything is in tip-top shape then it's probably not a bad buy at that price.

Take a look at "Selling Porsche" under general Porsche chatter as Nick is trying to value his 87 SSE and there are bound to be useful comments.

I agree totally with Jamie's comments as they are similar to the advice given to me when I was buying.

The SSE is a great looking car as it has the Turbo body and running gear. But you are also buying into weight without the additional power (and turbo lag) of the Turbo. Some will tell you that the 3.2 (930) is a better all round car for day to day driving and as a Turbo owner, I think they are probably right.

£16.5K for a 85 Coupe without the G50 gearbox seems enough money to me, but how do you go about valuing the "restoration work".

I looked at an 87 SE (no turbo body but with the smaller whale fin) cabrio that had 75K on the clock and drove really well. Asking under £17K through a dealer. I also tested a 88 SSE cabrio with the option list ticked that was reduced to £18K. But was also offered a 85 SE cab rebuilt by a well known specialist for £20K! Just a guide because I couldn't find any ryme or reason behind asking prices when I was looking.

Best wishes, Anthony
