I am considering purchasing a 996 Carrera German Import. I would like something say 99 year Carrera 2 or 4 coupe with between 40-75k miles with the aerokit, full porsche history and no accident history for around 25k pounds, is this too little. Can anyone recommend some tried and trusted importers of LHD porsche with full service history etc?Cheers.

dont know any LHD specialists..... try a web search ?

if the seller does a full german TUV report (which is detailed) then you will at least know the history & any obvious flaws from the car....

import direct if you can... can be loads of hassle but you SAVE a fortune over any UK importer......

I agree with Sundeep. The web is really useful and there are bags of imported LHD cars around already in the UK. Prices are lower for LHD than RHD but condition of the car comes into play also.

I'm also new to Porsche and am currently doing my research into the used 993 market. I'm fortunate to be living and working in Holland at the mo' but will be coming back to UK permanently by Xmas. Im torn between buying a car here or waiting until 2005 and buying in the UK. Dutch prices are high, although german imports do work out cheaper. Taxes and such like really cancel the lower price levels out though. From my research so far FX rates between GBP and Euro currently make euro car prices less attractive than GBP prices on equivalent models. My budget is about 22-25K GBP or up to 35K EUR

Why don't you try Fuchs in Nottingham (www.fuchs.co.uk) who specialise in Left Hookers . I don't know anything about them other than they will try and source the car youre looking for.

P.S - If anyone can give me some pearls of wisdom on my dilemma of either buying in Holland or buying LHD in the UK I'd be grateful.......

wardy

when I was looking for mine.. I found prices in germany to be lower, although there were more lower mileage 993's in belgium & holland.. but supply & choice was much more limited...

remeber when you import to the uk.... there is no import tax to pay as long as the car is more than 6 months old or having done mor ethan 6000 miles...

I spend months on
www.uk.mobile.de
trying to find one.. and now I have !

there are still a fair few lhd's around.... try
www.autotrader.co.uk
and even
www.ebay.co.uk
as I've seen a few early LHD 993's up around £20k on both...

regards

I did a three garage visit the other day, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche, well what can I say, the buzz of just being on the Porsche forecourt looking at the cars was like othing I have ever had when looking at cars. My mind is made up.

Can anyone tell me I know it's a lot to ask what I exactly need to look at when buying a left hooker porsche? Is there a book I can get that explans all so I don't get caught out I'm happy to do plenty of research as I will not get ripped off!

I have heard of TUV reports as above and PPI inspections or something, what exactly are these, is there anywhere I can find all I need to know in one place!?

Many thanks for all your help, I'm very greatful!

Thanks for the link, one other thing thats just crossed my mind, how much will porsche dealerships give on price, I know Merc and BMW have massive mark ups and we have got some good discounts before but I dunno how much a Porsche dealership would sway because they have high demand, October is quitest month of year for car dealerships so think I will target October for purchase.

Hi Sundeep -

You mentioned that there is no VAT on cars that have been owned for 6 months or have done more than 6000 miles. I heard that once you import if you cannot sell your car for at least 12 months - is that true? Do you or any other of you guys no about importing a car and selling it immediately?

Appreciate your advice

lhd advice.

From my experience of buying 100's of Porsche in Europe when the exchange rate was better I might be able to give some tips. The german market suited me best because there was more porsche, the legal situation discouraged some of the unpleasant 'games' that other Countries employed (clocking crashing). For various reasones you may be safer in Germany.

Due dillegence is still needed.

A ppi is fine, but bone up with as much 'knowledge' as you can yourself, multiple ppi start costing lots of money and many cars can be rejected with a few well targeted queries.

Tax or VAT. This is not legal advice so dont try to sue later........ I have found that enquiries to the local customs and excise dont always come up with the right answers, but if you get it wrong due to their advice, you are still in trouble...... forget the notion of VAT free. Some cars will attract VAT, some will not. The older you go the less likely you need to pay VAT. The test is: has it had vat paid in a Eurpean member Country?, if it is VAT paid you are fine, if it isnt, you pay.

Typically, if the car is privately registered its fine, if its business registered enquire. There is no escaping tax or death.....(this of course applies to us in Europe).

If the taxes are paid you can sell whenever you jolly well like...otherwise we dealers couldnt operate. This is different if you are claiming tax free exemption because of residency. This isnt legal advice.

As a rule of thumb, expect the whole import route to cost you about a £1000 and some time and hair pulling.

As one of the posts suggested many of the lhd are cheaper here than mainland Europe.

Hope this helps you.

Many thanks for that advice, I think clearly my best bet is to find something in the UK so I can drive it, get it all checked out and be sure of what I'm shelling out my cash for.

As Adrian says above, prices and current exchange rate (0.6750 GBP to 1 EUR) make it a far more potentially expensive excercise importing yourself from germany than it used to. As a guide, I use Auto-salon Singen as a guide to the more expensive end of the non OPC market in Germany. As an example:

http://www.autosalon-singen.de/Katalogfahrzeug_RecordView_DetailAll.cfm?fahrzeugID=02470_0210_04_04&languageID=GB

Is a 2000 carrera 2 Coupe. it doesnt say the mileage but at EUR 49,900, that puts it at GBP 33,682. AutoBahn on the independant dealers here in the UK has a 2000 RHD C2 at GBP 36,995.

There are cheaper sources there but with them come the increased risk of a 'badun'

I looked at the website mobile.de and was suprised ot see a car for sale there that was offered to me by an immporter as a OPC Germany car with full porsche service history and accident free and the pictures showed it was some dodgy German garage and certainly not a porsche centre!

I am interested to see what impact the release of the 997 911 has on the 996 values as on the one hand people should be changing in their 996's which leads to increased supply of used 996's and a subsequent fall in prices but on the other porsche 911's have such strong demand that they may well just hold up.I would like to see a couple of higher mileage 996 carreras at OPC for 32k but they are hovering around 38k at present.
