Bought a 1982 911 3.0 SC last November for £4250. Its a bit tatty bodywork wise and interior but basically sound and drives OK.

Now that i've driven it for a bit and found out a lot more about 911's I'm wondering what to do. Whether its worth spending money on it or trying to sell it and put the money to a better car.

The current issues are that althought the engine appears fairly smooth and pulls well there is a clattering noise around 4000 revs. It has been suggested to me that this is the cylinder head gasket. Has anyone had a similar experience and if so how much to repair.?

Also the bumpers are fairly tatty and would appear to need to be dismantled and resprayed. Is it true that because they are aluminium they can simply be ground down?

Clattering at 4000rpm....get it checked out by a Porsche specialist, broken head studs, camchain noise are more likely. Ask for a proper assesment.

Adrian

Thanks for the info. If it is what you suggest is that likely to be very expensive to repair?

Probably I am afraid. So get the whole car assesed, body, mechanicals etc and see if it makes sense to fix or sell as is needing work. No point putting good money into bad. Sorry hope its good news.
