What exactly (if anything) do the Porsche model numbers relate to?

964; 993; 996; 997???

Explanation much appreciated

Sorry, not made my question clear.

What I meant was, do the numbers actually relate to a particular feature of the car. Surely 964/993/996 must 'mean' something, rather than just being randomly selected numbers?

Like Ferrari for example

308 = 3 litre/8 cylinder

512 = 5 litre/12 cylinder

Will, my understanding is that they are Porsche project numbers that are allocated to the car during the initial design stage. So if thats true what happens when we get to the 4th generation of 911 from now.... the Porsche 1000??
