We have been in consultation with a very nice chap from a company in the Netherlands that produces retrofit HID projectors for cars. He produces kits for 9x6 era cars that rolled out of factory with the quite frankly dangerous halogen headlights. These kits are not the same as just whacking uprated HID bulbs into light assemblies with halogen 'reflectors'. These go one step further to actually put a projector lens in there, so that the beam and cut off are legitimate for other road users and you get the upmost useable light.
He does plenty of other products including upgrades for Litronic cars etc.
Below you will find a good thread where a lot of the elements surrounding HID retrofits are discussed.

Bottom line, I am of the personal belief from previous experience that HIDs retrofits where projector lens are involved are not only an amazing upgrade in terms of viability at night but are also not an MOT fail. Although there is some debate about that.
If you are interested, please register interest. Gen1 cars require a bit more work as the assemblies must be split. Gen2 people have it a lot easier than that. Although instructions and videos are available for both obviously.
I am in no way affiliated with the seller and all opinions expressed in this thread are my own. I can't be held accountable should your local MOT Centre feel differently to mine.
