Negative Bad Feedback - Specialist Cars of Malton - John Hawkins
Anyone reading this who is thinking of doing business with the above individual/company, I would strongly advise you to take all necessary precautions and obtain full legal advice before doing so. Here's my experience
I used SCOM last year to restore my 1985 911 Targa Super Sport. They did a fantastic job and I was very happy with the result. So when I received a call from John in March 2019, asking me if I wanted to invest in a low mileage Porsche 993 Turbo, I had no reason to doubt his intent or the deal he presented to me. He stated that the car was in his possession and the owner needed a quick sale. The deal was that we jointly purchase the car (I invest 50%, SCOM invest the other 50%) he stated that there was a purchaser lined up and that we would each make a small profit. Alternatively if he hadn't sold it within 3 months I had the right to purchase his interest in the car.
As I say above, this was in March 2019, and 3 months later I spoke and wrote to SCOM stating that I intended to exercise my right to acquire the remaining interest in the car.
John categorically stated that I couldn't as he had sold it and taken a deposit on the car. This deposit turned out to be from Andrew Howarth with whom John has had a number of dealings with.
Each time I approached John he came up with a number of different excuses why the car was not available, either to buy or to inspect, even at one stage suggesting it was at an OPC who on further enquiries had never even heard of the car.
I was forced to take the matter to court, which has been a very costly experience, and at no point has SCOM offered any explanation where the car is, although I believe it might no longer be in the UK. There has been no communication from him and still no money.
I hope the above information is useful to whoever is reading this, in enabling you to make a decision on whether doing business with SCOM is indeed the right choice. It has certainly wasn't for me.
