As the title suggests, I'm looking at a set of 16" wheels with winter tyres - specifically to gain the most sidewall for the awful b-roads I do every day.

Will I get these on (1998 996.1 C2), or is 17" the smallest I can use? Does anyone have any non-Porsche suggestions on cheap rims I can put giant winter tyres on

Would these even fit a 996?

17's is smallest as far as I know. TBH with 17's and the sidewall they have you will be fine IMO.
Ive generally run 17's on other cars with 225/45/17 profile on bad winter roads and never had an issue.

Those rally cars will have have competition tyres so stiffer sidewalls, normal 16in winters will really upset handling id say.

How cool is that light pod on the white 996 though 8)

There are 16" Boxster alloys out there with the right offset. However, I think the issue is brake caliper clearance. The 16s were never fitted to the Boxster S which shared the caliper with a standard 996.
