Winter is coming

So this winter I plan to recommission the A/C on my car, including replacing the evaporator and condensor, so wondered if anyone had tackled this recently and had any tips to share ?

My plan of attack is based on using these guides:

https://www.pelicanparts.com/techar...eplacement/65-ELEC-Evaporator_Replacement.htm

https://www.pelicanparts.com/techar...ase_Removal/63-ELEC-HVAC_Suitcase_Removal.htm

https://www.pelicanparts.com/techar...ement/64-ELEC-Expansion_Valve_Replacement.htm

I'm also going to remove the front Pu at the same time, to make changing the condenser easier and "while I'm in there" change out the oil cooler temp sensor and the corroded headlight guides.

The CCU unit is off to Bergville to get serviced and I've got a new compressor, dryer and the a/c lines have been changed.

I've got an hydraulic lift, which should make the whole job that bit "easier".

So any expeience to share and any other jobs I should add to my list that go in with this work ?

Brave man!

Why don't you photograph your steps and document it all in a new thread in the 993 FAQ's area?

Yeah, i'll submit a bit of a write up, I did one for my cv boot refurb last year.

This job certainly looks like plenty of steps, but none of them look to bad. Having the lift makes me a bit more confident. Honestly, I'd rather be doing something more interesting on the car, but I want the a/c working for a europe trip I'm planning next year. I find the cabin heats up like the proverbial glassblowers in the UK on a hot day, so can't face the thought of european temps without the a/c to at least help out.

Good luck in your endeavours.
I would also change the oil cooler and condenser fan low speed resistors.

You'll also find a lot of HVAC DIY info here:

I guess you already have seen this:

Hi Tore,

Do you have any opinion or experience on the Hella evaporators vs the Porsche OEM ones? I presume the latter are made by someone like Hella anyway, but they are currently selling about the £750 mark whereas the Hella's are £200 with a 2 year warranty. I can of course maybe pick up an OEM a little cheaper off ebay etc, but that's potentially without a warranty, and are they any better than a Hella ?

Regards

Andrew

I am sorry, I do not have experience in evap changes/brands other than I got mine changed about 10 years ago using the original Porsche part.
I have had some contact with Griffiths Technical Inc. in the US, they seem to be well acquainted with these things, but I have never tried their products or services.
Cheers,
Tore

I'm going to get my A/C sorted, but I am taking the easy option and outsourcing it.

would love to be able to give it a go myself, but I suspect ( I KNOW) it wouldn't end well......

Good luck with the project

I paid £75 for an evaporator which was very well made. Don't get drawn in to buying well-branded over-priced parts! This looks the one

If you want to go 'top shelf' there is a company in the US that manufactures 'uprated' evaporators to offer more cooling.

thanks Zingari that's a good piece of info...I can't quite believe they can make it for that price !

I do enjoy doing these things myself, so that's part of the fun of the car for me...I wouldn't be trying it if I didn't have the lift though.

good tip.... but as we know each other, I'll admit to my OCD and that I spend many hours with the PET and religiously order all the oem replacement clips and screws .... I know its sad and unnecessary and they're probably not even as good as the set yourself suggested, but there you go. feel better for getting that off my chest. :)

So here's a bump on my own thread to share the outcomes of my aircon refurb work over the winter - in summary, what a hassle, but it does now work nicely - hope this guide is some help to those considering the same work:

thanks for forum members for tips and support :)
