Looking at buying this 997T, advice and help please

Hi New to the site.

I used to own a 5.0 928 from new many years ago.

Also had a 996 15 or more years ago.

Looking at joining the marque again.

This time a 997 turbo. I have read through many posts etc and aware of general problems but this is more car specific.

Is this too cheap?
Should I be wary of the seller not being a specialist? etc
I also have this following information on the attachment
Is there anything major missing, should I be looking at a new clutch soon? etc

The problem with posting an ad is that someone might sneak in before you... not me I need a left hand drive.

That being said, I'd want a PPI from a decent independent. I wouldn't want to see any issues with any major moving parts, the 4WD, the turbos etc. These are often modified and who knows what boost it has been running.

Sneak in? as in buy it first, I can wait for the right car.

Yes I would be arranging a PPI from a decent specialist before committing.

Is there a way of telling on the PPI if it has been modified and returned to standard?

I don't think it's too cheap given the mileage. I'd want to examine the service history, is it full, who has been carrying out the servicing? Do they have receipts as well as the book, is the book original or is it a 'replacement'.
Does it have matching N rated tyres? These questions will give you a very good idea of how well the car was looked after.

All main dealer history says car was looked after regardless. I'd say that pretty much the same about the 'main' Porsche independents out there.

What I did find out recently is Strasse Porsche sub-contracts their servicing. So getting into this is a good start. Check MOT history, does it have lots of advisories etc. This is a good way to get feedback on car health (free too)

The servicing was done at Porsche in Wilmslow.
I attached the schedule from Porsche to the original post, not sure if you can see it.

MOT history generally good apart from odd nail in tyre and horn not working, but can see Porsche replaced the horn during a service

Can't see it on my computer. Can see it now I'm on my phone. I use Wilmslow for servicing so I can attest to them being very good. I just had my Boxster done there last month and my 911 goes there as well.

Hi Jimbo.

There are very few problems specifically associated with the 997Turbo although any 13 year old car with 87k miles on it needs a PPI to enable you to go in with your eyes open. If the car passes your own viewing test and the service history etc stacks up the investment in a PPI will give peace of mind and/or a list to help negotiate the right purchase price.

At just under £40k from a dealer it's priced competitively but it's not 'too cheap'. The price reflects the mileage and the current market place.

That attachment shows the fairly recent history as held by an OPC. The major spend and 111 point check done in February 2018 is good news.

Clutch life is dependant on the type of driving the car has done and when it was last replaced so would need specific checking.

:grin: The pics show that it is indeed a Tip'.

I've just looked at the MOT history and all points to it being a regularly used but well maintained car.

The most interesting bit for me was that it did 35k miles in the year between 18/09/09 and 18/09/10. Fair play to that owner. :worship:

As an aside, my Turbo will be put up for sale over the next week or so if you're after a low mileage manual. I've owned if for 10.5 years, it has been pampered, I'm only selling to finance my racing career!

I remember seeing it some years back at Hedingham Castle, can't imagine you will have any difficulty selling. Very decent after market exhaust note if I recall.

Its got the porsche warranty and was inspected in April 2018, so they must be happy with its condition etc in order to put that in place.

In general, the 997 turbo is pretty reliable especially if used daily, which that car must have been to have that mileage. When mine got to that mileage id needed new brake discs/pads and the front radiators and that was about it.

It does seem a good price I would say but the seller checks out feedback wise and the history looks ok. I would say get a full inspection on it and pay particular attention to the condition of the turbos and turbo lines. THe OPC warranty expires in Feb 2020 so you want to find out what will need doing sooner after then. I dont have one (OPC warranty) on my turbo!! but I would say there are a fair amount of items at this age/mileage that may be wise to attend to that an OPC warranty wouldnt cover anyway as they are presumably not a current issue. So running outside of warranty would be wise to have a bit of a slush fund to cover anything that comes up.
