Ticking noise to Rebuild time - worst 50 Miles ever.

Well my ticking noise that developed after doing an oil change was diagnosed as a big end bearing failure. Not sure if if the oil change bringing down some sludge and blocking the oil ways had anything to do with this but I only did about 50 miles after the oil change when I noticed the ticking noise on idling on my driveway.

Its rebuild time for me I'm afraid which was originally planned for 2 years time once I had finished paying University fees for my youngest.

The history on this car was a bit sketchy when I bought it so I knew a rebuild was on the cards at some stage with 100K on the clock. The service book said the IMS bearing had been changed at 80K so I was not to worried about that going pop on me.

The engine has been dropped and broken and it has come to light at some stage the engine has been broken before as it has closed deck liners installed. I have also been told that I have bore score on 4 & 5. Photos have been supplied etc.

There is no play in the IMS bearing which is the standard OEM bearing fitted by Porsche Sussex, however, as part of the rebuild I am advised to have this replaced. I have been given various options here with one of the options being replaced FOC with another standard OEM bearing. What would you go for here and would the extra £500 ish for the EPS bearing really be worth the extra money?
 
That is seriously bad luck. Sorry. How do the other bearings look? I'd go with a standard IMSB minus seals. What is your thinkung WRT the bore scoring? I don't see how an oil change could affect it.

Bearings

the other bearings looked OK - they will all be replaced but having to go with a secondhand crank as cant be reground within tolerances.

3-6 will be lined - doesn't make sense just to do 4 & 5.
 
Have you sourced a secondhand crank? Is it a 3.4 or a 3.6? Both are like hen's teeth though due to not being regrindable. I keep an eye on the usual sales places and have bought one of each in the last 3 or so years for a sensible price.

yes my man has sourced one - he's into racing on the Porsche Motorsport circuit and found one at one of his specialist contacts.
 
yes - a well known engine rebuilder which I am not going to mention on here at the moment until I found out more.

not sure if they were done previously on 1-3 and left 3-6 alone? I will find out more and report back.
 
I think it is largely irrelevant who did the previous work, unless it is thought that the failure was caused by some debris they left in. I'd be interested to see photos of the bearings though. We know that they wear and around 100k can be rebuild territory depending on usage patterns.

It is the others I was more interested in to see how close they were. Are there date codes on the shells to see if they have been changed previously?

all 6 were done previously.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions they are not the Aluminum Nikosil liners used by a well know engine re-builders prominent on here. I have spoken to them and shown them the photos.
 
...I had Westwood steel liners installed when my engine was rebuilt as hairline cracks were discovered when the block was tested...a very well established (100yrs) engineering company fitted them...all good with me...

Westwood was mentioned for replacement liners but he is recommending liners made from an engineering firm that makes them for classic F1 cars & Ferraris.
