Hi Folks, ive recently bought a 997.2, 2010, 3.6l, 60kmiles, had been looking a while and went for the 997.2 on the basis that I had heard these were bullet proof engines - so no PPI :( and a private seller who seemed very honest. Since being on this forum and doing a bit of research it seems that 997.2 also suffer from bore scoring. I have no idea what these engines are meant to sound like, but I do hear all sorts of clicking noises when listening to the engine on idle. I do not see any smoke on start up unless its parked at a banked angle. Ive done 1200 miles with about 200ml oil loss mainly because I changed the oil filter to see if there were any metal particles in it (there were none). Had a 111point check done by a OPC, they flagged a number of yellow issues but nothing with the engine.

My head says everything is fine, it certainly goes like a rocket so seems mechanically fine but I am a bit paranoid that there could be something wrong.

Spoke to the wife and she said get it checked out and put the issue to bed, that's what i'm going to do.

Can anyone recommend a company that can do a boroscope/compression test near Epsom, surrey?

Thanks

Then what after the bore inspection ? Are you willing to spend £12k/£14k should there be a trace of borescoring ?

I accept that there is much negativity over these cars mainly generated by the motoring press & indeed this forum but why not enjoy your car until such time as a fail prevents you ?
In the meantime change the oil yearly / 7k-8k , warm it up thoroughly & just treat it right with regard maintenance & upkeep .

£12 - £14K on another engine 😳

I thinks it's about time I too started to get paranoid........

I know the fear well! When I was searching the cars I wanted to be OK (both 997.1) where both effected by light scoring on 4&6 and both had no physical/visable symptoms although oil consumption-wise that's based on the private sellers word so who knows!

I nearly didn't buy either car as a result but elected to take one on based on the knowledge but then overall decided to assuming/factoring at somepoint in my ownership I'd likely have to rebuild.

If I didn't buy my car I was going to opt for a 997.2 as I understand the DFI engine is far stronger as I believe this is much better than the 997.1 from a cooling perspective.

No doubt one of the specialists mentioned can do a borescope and give you the peace of mind you need.

I only have personal experience of Northway in Reading and found Paul there excellent. He did one of my PPI's/borescopes. Perhaps worth seeing if you can agree a price for a service/maintenance plus borescope to get some overall cost efficiencies? From whoever your chosen specialists is.

I'm sure all is OK but at this point I think it's best to have the car checked for your sanity! :)

The 997.2 doesnt suffer from bore scoring!(at least the design floor that causes it) any engine can get bore scoring for a variety of reasons, but if your checking the 997.2, you may as well check all your cars! :hand:

I have also have a 997.2 3.6 and mines on 74k. They do like to drink oil, so nothing to worry about there.

I also didn't bother with a PPI.

I'm sure your car is fine. Relax and enjoy the car.

:yeah:

........ although I do understand that for your own peace of mind you might still want to get it done.

Once you have, relax and get on with enjoying the ownership experience. :thumb:

It's just paranoia, there is nothing wrong with the engine, but by all means get it checked just for peace of mind.

This^^^^^^^

I have a 997.2 and sleep well every night. I wouldn't worry about it as its highly unlikely to occur in your car. Let it warm up before giving any welly and enjoy.

:?: I have been a regular on this site for many years and have only heard of 1 DFI engine that has had terminal issues....nothing to do with bore scoring.

The DFI engine has all sorts of clicking noises on idle...perfectly normal.

The 3.8 that I had had done 70k before it was traded in and used roughly 1 litre of oil every year/'5 to 7k miles.

I owned it for 4.5 years and the only engine issue was a throttle body replacement (lumpy idle and hesitant throttle)

IMHO you will be wasting your money getting a bore score check.......and a decent indy will tell you so.

I had a 996 with bore scoring...so I know what it feels like when you start to "hear" noises that weren't there before.
Don't worry...just get on with enjoying the car :judge: :thumb:

There are of course some issues with Gen 2 engines (as with any other manufacturers products) but they are so rare that they would not be considered worth worrying about unless there are very obvious signs and performance deterioration or very high oil consumption. Any faults resulting in bore scoring would be more likely to occur in winter or after an overheating issue of some kind.

We did post when we received some cars with engine faults in order to establish how common they were and we also sorted out some repair options but since then have had not one enquiry - so you would be very unlucky if your is faulty.

Don't worry - enjoy it.

I own a 2005 March build gen 1 S Engine number confirms better bearing. Ok clutch water pump etc I get replaced - Biggest shock WAS THE PRICE FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE 18 position switches - its about £340 - two front shocks at around £800 pair. SUPERSPRINT manifolds and exhausts etc the list amounts along with major and minor every year amounts to around £11,000 to keep it tip top

HOWEVER - I know its only a gen1 - and some of you regard this model as somewhat chocolate
:bandit:

Well mine does not have bore scores - just scuffs - Enjoy

Gen 2 cars are bomb proof
