PostPosted: Sun Jun 23, 2019 4:14 pm    Post subject: Finally! I’ve done it! I own a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Reply with quote

It feels strange writing that. It still hasn’t quite sunk in. But for a little over a week, I’ve been the owner of a beautiful cobalt blue 997 Carrera 4S with just a little under 50,000 miles on it. The spec is ocean leather, sport design wheels, PSE, sport chrono, sports seats, bose, xenons, sunroof.

For those of you who have followed my (lack of) progress over the last two years, this is a significant occasion.

First of all I have to thank deMort for being patient to the point of being saintly and offering sober, sage advice at every turn. I can’t thank you enough mate, you’re an absolute legend.

I had to endure 4 PPIs, all of which found substantial problems ranging from a (presumed) split crankcase and completely corroded underbody to the dreaded bore scoring (on a 996 4S).

And those are the cars I paid to have inspected. There were a great deal more that I travelled around the country to look at and walked away from. I didn’t want to believe the independent specialists I spoke with that there were a lot of bad cars out there. I was certain I’d be lucky and find that one unicorn: a great Porsche for a cheap price.

Long story short: you get what you pay for.

The market can be tricky. And variable. And sometimes there are bargains to be had. But the bottom line is that very good examples of 911s, regardless of whether they are 996s or 997s, will be expensive. They were never cheap to begin with. So thinking you can get a car with only minor issues for 15 grand is a bit of a fantasy. One that I indulged in quite regularly I must admit.

Naturally, this realisation led me to 911 Virgin.

I won’t give a gushing write up, as I suspect it might embarrass Tom. But all I can say is that after two years of frustration and disappointment, dealing with Tom was a breath of fresh air. It even made parting with a substantial chunk of money a pleasure (just).

From helping to sort out insurance to fixing a few things that came up after purchase, Tom and the team at 911 Virgin have been consummate professionals and provided exceptional customer service. You get the feeling that they actually want to take care of you and that they care. That’s rare in my experience.

So what do I get from seven years of saving, two years of searching and several hundred frustrations?

My dream car. It feels almost brand new.

It was purchased Porsche approved in 2014, which says a lot given it would have been 8 years old at the time. It’s been driven very sparingly since and little details like the state of the lamps, which seem to have been completely unaffected by UV rays, for example, suggest a car that has led a very easy life. Looking at the rev reports would confirm that, with just a handful in range 1 and even fewer in 2. It’s all original paint – even the front bumper. And the bores are as smooth as you could hope for (photographed and inspected).

History is great, with all main dealer stamps up until last year and yearly oil changes.

It may not be for everyone, but when you spend at the top of the market for these cars, you should be getting something that you shouldn't have to spend that much more on other than regular and preventive maintenance (crossing fingers and toes and knocking on wood).

I believe this is one of those cars and one that I will be taking very, very good care of.

Because I love it and it makes me smile. And what more could you want from a 911?

I don’t know if you ever saw the Porsche ad (which I worked on back then) with the little boy who goes to the dealership, stares in awe at the 997 and asks the salesman for a business card. The boy then says to the salesman ‘I’ll call you in about 20 years’.

I was that boy. But it’s been even longer than that for me.

It still feels odd to say, so I’ll do it again just to be sure:

I own a Porsche 911.

And some less artsy ones, to show how changeable cobalt blue can be depending on the light:

deMort and Tom 911v, two men I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with.

Congratulations, the former mentioned this purchase when I saw him the other day.

I still say that to myself after nearly 10 years. Wink

Welcome to 911 ownership at last. It looks like you've bagged yourself a nice one. Thumb
