I wonder why Mr Mearns kept Helen Goff Sweeeeeet Question

".....and writing about Porsche cars for Magazines. I have organised events, hosted meeting for Porsche club GB and DDK-online.com and advised others on buying Porsches."

mmmmm I think Helen has proved the point not disproved it.

It must be hard for the porsche illuminanti to accept they have been had hook line and sinker by Mr Mearns over the years who effectively used his relationship with them to bolster his (false) reputation to allow others to fall into the honey trap nooo

To be honest I think she is genuine ie in the sense that she was "looked after" by Mr Mearns to help build / faciliate his rep in the Porsche world. I donlt think there is any malice in her post ....simply massive nievity to what actually went on and how she and others in PCGB where used to faciliate his frauds Judge

One of the main things with a good con is giving yourself even a hint of credibility, nearly all companies now will jump on any Celeb or Multi national who has used their companies services. This immediately gives them cudos in that particular field, hence Andrew Mearns using magazines to 'supply' cars for road tests etc.

He was at the Classic Car show a few years ago with a load of Porsche cars and if bul###it were music he'd have been a Brass Band!

LOL.

I saw that comment all right.

The comment from PCGB about having had sufficient knowledge / concerns to withdraw honorary membership was sickening to read.

I wonder why the PCGB PR machine (sorry, "Communications Dept") is so quiet on this subject? Are they waiting for the result of the Police investigations before they make a statement - even though they knew enough to withdraw Mearns 'Honorary Member' status?

Keep in mind that Andrew Mearns was also the face of Swissvax in the UK for a while and there's a whole tale there. I know someone who used to be involved with Swissvax and when I asked him out of the blue if he knew anything about Andrew he spat out "that effing crook".

The club's decision about Andrew *may* have been because of their experiences with him and Swissvax. Certainly if you read through the club's minutes Swissvax does seem to come across as a problem child. But the minutes are sanitised and don't give much away.

Peter Bull left the role of club chairman in early 2017. When did Andrew's novel approach to SoR begin?

Helen Goff used to frequent 911uk for a while, joined the forum in 2007 and the most recent of her postings was in January 2012.
Saw and spoke with her at a couple of meets some years back, seemed pleasant enough.
She owned a green and white 911 Austrian police car that would show up at the odd meet.

Sorry but this is pure speculation on your part. Show us some evidence that there is overlap between the period that Helen bought cars from Andrew and the period Andrew started playing fast and loose with SOR funds and his other dodgy dealings.

Andrew hasn't been screwing people since day 1. They had loads of satisfied customers for years and years. Then at some point Andrew started to get greedy and/or lose money and he went from being a secondhand car dealer to a crook.

That how do you account for me buying a car with undeclared damage in 2004 and I had to pay thousands to get it fixed correctly? Do you know how much it costs just to rent a jig?

If you haven’t been affected, you really have no right to defend the indefensible.

Sorry he sold you a dodgy car. I genuinely am. I hate to see people get shafted, especially when in pursuit of a hobby or passion. I can understand your emotion and your anger at the man.

But there's also a huge difference between caveat emptor and fraud. In my book neither is ethical and neither is right. Sadly only one is illegal.

ShadesofRed, selling an un-roadworhy car is illegal

Please refer to this link http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?p=1474783&highlight=#1474783 this is an account of events that happened in 2004 !!

I should add, since this has all come to light I have been advised from reliable individuals of more such un-roadworthy vehicles being sold and attempted SOR frauds dating back over the last 10 years by Andrew Mearns of Gmund.

Unroadworthy cars

The Road Traffic Act 1988 makes it an offence to sell an unroadworthy car. The Act does not distinguish between private sellers and motor traders.

What is an unroadworthy car?
If a vehicle is not satisfactory in any of the following areas it may be unroadworthy:

- steering and steering gear
- brakes and braking systems
- tyres
- exhaust systems
- seatbelts and seatbelt anchorages
- general condition (corrosion, suspension etc.)

It is a criminal offence for selling an unroadworthy car. If you sell one, you could be prosecuted and if found guilty may be subject to a fine of £5000 on summary conviction.

To repeat exactly what JonTT has repeated.

If anyone is trying to connect Professor Plum, a candle stick and Colonel Mustard all the way to the actual crimes of the con man Andrew Mearns and Gmund, there isn't one.

Please can we all remind ourselves of the site's code of conduct when posting on this thread.

I bought the car, then found the (long list of faults (which after investigation I discovered that previous owners and sellers knew about - because they told me what had happened, who bodged the fix and that the car was hawked around the sports car sellers in the South of England). Mearns had the car back for five weeks but didn’t fix the problems.

And don’t forget; I had the car Pre-purchase inspected by one of two specialists recommended by Mearns.

I still have the estimates of up to £15k (from three very reputable Porsche specialist bodyshops) for the rectification to pull out the damage, rebuild the front of the car from the windscreen forward and an outline legal figure of £10k just to get everything sorted. I spent just over £6k on legal fees before working out that it just wasn’t worth it and I piled the money into fixing the car. It was lovely when it was finished but no thanks to Mearns.

Now, ShadesofRed, whisper to me how saintly you think that he was in 2004 and you may deduce, therefore how he had the brass neck to move on to the next, and the next....?
