Hi,

Newbie here and first post...

I've just placed a holding deposit on a 997.1 with VW garage in Liverpool

https://www.sytner.co.uk/volkswagen/car-search/9943003-1204573-porsche-911-s-2dr-tiptronic-s-coupe

Its reasonably priced and I'm specifically after a yellow one, it appears on the surface to be a well looked after vehicle, it has a FSH mainly with Porsche Chester and has a lot of documented work, including recent work to suspension @ approx. £2700 and spark plugs and coli packs @ £700. The salesman told me the previous owner was an active Porsche enthusiast who had the car for four years, I've asked for him to pass my details on so I can learn more about the history but I don't think he has. I did get the salesman to ask about bore scoring check and the previous owner said he thinks its been done but has no proof.

I've spoken to a number of local independant Porsche specialists to get a PPI done but I'm hoping someone on here knows the car.

The car does come with a 1 yr warranty backed by VW, I've asked for the T&Cs but not yet received them, I did find a copy online but not sure if they only applied to VW cars. It seemed pretty comprehensive cover with claim limit being car purchase price.

The MOT history checks out and is in line with mileage.

Spec wise not very well documented on VW website but has the following over and above what I think was standard - heated seats, sports exhaust (retro fitted by Porsche chester a few years ago, extended leather, BOSE

Cheers
Rob

Hi & Welcome.

Insist on a bore score check or get your own done before handing over the dosh. Previous enthusiast saying "I think" would ring bells for me.

Just noticed its a tip. The 3.8 997.1 tiptronic is the worst 911 prone to bore scoring.

Be very wary.

Definitely needs a bore scope as Alex says. But looks a really nice car.

There is a speed yellow Porsche group on Facebook you could ask. Or I can ask for you as it's a closed group I think.

Always worth a call to the last servicing garage to see what they will tell you. Usually just if it's got any outstanding recalls or major work done. They can tell if it's got any opc warranty so that's a reason for them to help you :thumb:

Thanks for the replies however I've decided against proceeding I just don't want to take a risk with this variant, I know I'd constantly worry about IMS and bore scoring plus the spec isn't exactly what I want and it was a compromise because I really want a yellow one and there are so few.

Just been looking at the photos. Looks like left pipe is smoking and sooty at the bottom. Right pipe clear and clean as a whistle.

I agree with Alex, the sooty bank 2 tips and a vague "I think it's been scoped" would be enough for me not to proceed. You've dodged an expensive bullet I think!

yellow :worship: Nice wheels, worth a few grand if there genuine.

Yes agreed there was few alarm bells there. First one being cagey about passing your details on or his to you. Secondly if your doing plugs and coil packs at that sort of mileage and cost, it would have been a few quid more to do a borescope check on all the cylinders.
Considering an engine rebuild could set you back £10k it could have been an expensive buy.
Sometimes when you find a car you want badly you can be easily talked into parting with your cash and ending up with a Lemon, no pun intended!

Nice looking car from the pics, desperately in need of lowering with those wheels, but as everyone else says, walk away if there is any doubt the engine is bore score free!

Its a shame with this model, as I love the colour & spec, as said if they cant give you the peace of mind then no point , if the car was fine I am sure the previous owner would have no problem in telling anyone.

I wonder if anyone will come out of the woodwork on this car, previous owners :?:

As an alternative to waiting for ages for a yellow car; buy a car with a good spec and safe history of any colour and simply wrap it yellow, like I did. Won't be a way forward for everyone, but do at least be aware of the option.

Did they take those pics pre-preparation?
Rusty nuts ( ), dirty carpets and dusty dash.....

Agree with the sooty left pipe too.
Pity as looks great with the Fuchs and deviated stitching (would have been even better with yellow stitching, belts and console).

Definitely needs full ppi and borescope.
