PostPosted: Sun Mar 03, 2019 2:47 pm    Post subject: Grinding noise (video) - is that my water pump? Reply with quote

Just got the major 12yr service and clutch done.

The health check showed that I also need the front crossover coolant pipes and the ones along the gear box done .

Water pump was also diagnosed as having slight play and may need replacement (quotes £630)

Driving home, i noticed the below grind noise, which either wasn't there before or i never took note of it before...

Is that the water pump?

Open Youtube Page

It starts making the noise once it warms up after a few minutes, and then becomes gradually more noticeable. i can hear it inside and outside the cabin.

Any thoughts appreciated, hope it's not the clutch or something misfitted. my theory is that when they checked the waterpump, which was probably about to start going out, it just expedited the process/failure.

It does sound like the pump to me .. that or a very strange idler bearing noise ... it would have to have excessive play to make this kind of a noise though.

A noise from the cltuch like this .. i think that would be pretty terminal as something would be loose .. also the noise would be at the gearbox and not really the back end of the car so im doubting its anything to do with that.

Belt off to confirm is the usual way.

OPC ?

If they replaced the drive belt when it was in then i would assume thats what has speeded up the play.

That sounds exactly like my Boxster did when the waterpump failed a few months ago, easy enough to check yourself on a 997, mine was wabbling around like no tomorrow Grin

Just for reference, I paid £150 for a new pump and fitted it myself, which is a PITA on a Boxster Very Happy

Thanks.

Don't think I'd be able to do that myself!

Should I avoid driving in the meantime? My usual garage is around 30miles away... haven't noticed any coolant leaking or power loss so far

I`d pop the drive belt off, quite simple, then grab hold of the WP pulley and see if it wobbles side to side, like mine did.
I wouldn`t want to drive it if is wobbling to be honest, it could fail at any second nooo

100% water pump.

my 997 started making that exact same noise. and then the water pump went.

get it fixed before it goes bad and packs up totally as you could lose the entire engine if the pump shats itself on the motorway!

Thanks!

I plan not to drive until i get it to a garage.

Has anyone had any experience with RGA in Vauxhall? It looks like they do more older generations, but they are just around the corner from me here. Wonder whether I try them for the waterpump, as my usual garage is 30miles away.
