997.2 PDK Sport Design Steering Wheel Advice

I finally brought my (almost) perfect 997.2 last week, a 2010 Carerra 2S PDK in great condition with the sport chrono pack (yes this weekend was extremely exciting, I've pretty much been grinning the whole time).

The only thing is that I cannot get on with is the regular wheel mounted shifter buttons and I'd like to swap to the Sport Design steering wheel. I'm hoping someone might be able to help with advice on the specific wheel to buy.

As I say, the car has the sport chrono pack so I think this is the right choice.

The page says:

Includes a display unit in spokes which indicates whether Sport, Sport Plus, or Launch Control modes have been activated

My question is whether I'll be able to hook up those lights in the steering wheel when I retrofit it? Or is that something which would need to have been done at the factory? If the lights aren't going to work I feel like I might be better off with this version which does not include them.

Beyond that, I think the process of swapping them out is relatively straightforward but I'd love to hear any tips or warnings, maybe I'm better off taking it to a specialist to have it changed over?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Yes it will work it is a straight swap, and the lights work...

If design 911 do not have stock the wheel has been superseded by a 991. code from the 991 which is available from OPC. They will say it won't fit but it does....

Oh excellent, thank you for the helpful response (and with better news than I was expecting)! Is fitting it a reasonably easy job? I consider myself fairly adept at that kind of thing but I'd hate to get something wrong. I'm guessing there's some kind of wiring loom inside the wheel for the lights which will be unused right now?

Search and you'll find many DIY articles/videos. Here's an example:

Watch it thoroughly, paying particular attention to the steps at the 2m08s and 5m08s marks.

You need to have a MY2010/2011/2012 car, and you need a wheel with the lights. The wiring for the lights comes through the clock-spring connector when both of those conditions are met.

For some people they work straight away after installing the wheel. For some, it requires the extra step of visiting your OPC and having them enable the lights.

Karl.

As others have said , a very easy swap, either buy a used sport wheel of if buying new as already said the OPC will show out of stock of the part number for the 997.2 thats because it has been superseded by a 991 part number but its the same wheel. :thumb: :thumb:

And make sure that you are sitting down when they tell you how much it is!

Probably cheaper than from Design 911. Especially if you pretend to be a PCGB member and ask for a discount.

I bought mine for my then Turbo on Ebay and swapped it myself... very easy job and all worked a treat as others have said

Related question: does anyone know if the alcantara leather version was an option on the MY10 997 C2S? That would probably be my preference over the regular leather but I'd rather keep it looking like it could've been original spec.

I have a 2010 c2s with a sport design wheel retrofitted by the previous owner. It has the writing on the wheel for sport lights but was under the impression that it would never work.

My car goes in to opc for a little warranty job will ask if they can do this as well.

So the new steering wheel arrived in the post on Friday and I fitted it Saturday following these instructions. It went smoothly and everything works as expected including the sport/plus and launch control lights.

Two minor gotchas which I wasn't expecting:

  1. The video says to use a torx bit on the bolt but that's incorrect. The correct bit was an M12 triple square (also known as spline or XZN).
  2. After reconnecting the battery, the car was showing PSM failure and PASM failure warnings which freaked me out a bit. I googled and was reassured that they'd clear after a few minutes of driving, which they did!

All in all it was extremely easy and I'm really happy with the results, thanks for the advice everyone!
