Guys, I have just viewed and test drove a 55 plate 911 997 3.8 2S with 32000 miles on the clock, Full Porsche History, just had a new clutch.
I have 2 issues:
One thing I noticed was the oil pressure was at 5 on start up (cold) and gradually fell to 2.5 as it warmed up which I would expect. However after 20 mins on tick over the oil pressure gauge read 5 again and didn't move. I turned off the car and restarted it and it was back to 2.5 and increasing as I increased the revs as expected. I could not get it to sit at 5 again, Is this an issue to be wary off or a sticky/ faulty sender etc?

Secondly I noticed that after the clutch was released there seemed to be a small amount of travel left on the pedal but no longer any strain on it I.e. just seemed to be the pedal continuing to release after the clutch was fully engaged and the load was fully off if this makes sense? Another way of describing it would be: you can press the clutch pedal in around 1 inch before the clutch starts to work or you feel any resistance like a dead zone?

Any advice etc would be much appreciated as apart from these issues the vehicle is very clean and keenly priced.

Thanks in advance
Max

Check the engine number for which IMS it has, late 2005 is the changeover....
Get it PPI'd and Bore Scoped.

Is it from a dealer, is there a warranty?

If in doubt, walk away, which is why you do the above!

Oil pressure and i would lean towards a sender unit sticking.

Clutch and it might need another bleed or just some use .. when first changed they often feel abit wierd and need a few miles to settle down .

Can i just say .. from my own personnel experience .. get a bore scope check done .. even if you dont have a ppi .. get that checked .

Thanks guys it is from a Porsche specialist and had been bore score checked and over rev checked and apparently "passed" whatever this means? There is a 3mth in-house warranty included in the deal. Does £27700 sound reasonable for this vehicle?

Thanks again
Max

It apparently has the revised bearing according to the engine number although a couple of specialists I have spoken to claim this is only a guide and you dont know for sure without removing gearbox!!!

From engine number info discussed before that car is well into the latest IMS revision sector.

It's that price primarily because of the mileage but if the condition and history is also good it's not OTT.

Make sure that the warranty hasn't got a stupidly low single claim limit.

If all's ok buy it and enjoy it.

Thanks it has full Porsche history with brand new discs pads and Pirelli P Zero tyres, as for condition it has one stone chip on bonnet and everything else is pretty much mint. Some small wear on blower control main 2 switches but this seems to be a common occurrence...
As for the warranty it apparently covers everything within the 1st 3mths of ownership and the guy stipulated that if catastrophic damage occurs they would take the car back and refund me the entire purchase price so seems quite fair.
I'm ready to hit the button and buy it:) I was very impressed with the ride and handling being the 1st 911 I've driven!!!

Thanks again
Max

With full OPC history you could have it inspected and take out the Porsche warranty, if it meets their criteria, after you have owned it for a few months.
Peace of mind Insurance.

Have you looked at many cars? Do you want a dealer car for peace of mind?
At that price you could easily buy a later 2007 / 08 car privately. You could also have it checked by an OPC for £250 and if okay put their comprehensive warranty on for circa £1k per year.

The miles are certainly in its favour, but the low spec would put me off.

Good luck with your decision! :thumb:

Hi tbh I was looking at private sales but nothing of interest came up locally and I then saw the low mileage example available. I usually buy 80k plus mileage cars but thought safer to go for a lower mileage example on the 911. I do agree after investigating further it is a low spec example and as I'm not in a rush to buy and want a mint example I may hold fire until the right vehicle turns up.
Thanks for advice

Sounds like a fair price given the low mileage. If it's sold by a Porsche specialist then I'd expect them to sort out the oil pressure unit issue for peice if mind.

Where are you based? I have a silver 3.8 coupe up for sale on here, higher mileage than this (86k), decent spec and bores inspected last October. Looking for around 21k. Its not a show winner by any means, but presents really well for age and mileage. I'm considering respraying the bumper to clean up the front end but its a decent option for somebody to enjoy at the lower end of the market.
Any inspection welcome and give me an excuse to keep my other (less reliable but equally thrilling) car!
