Motivated by a combination of the cardboardy sounding dash speakers in my 2002 C4S with PCM1 and Bose and Dammits thread -

- I decided to invest in some of the Hertz DCX 100.3 speakers. 4 to be precise. While these are 4 ohm and there is some suggestion that the Bose original speakers are 2 ohm, having looked at what a US based company and a UK company were suggesting as replacements for the Bose system, they are all 4ohm. I struggled trying to find any real information on an actual replacement.
So, I took out the front dash speaker. Its about 3 inches and has a cardboard cone, albeit, Bose and made in Germany. The Bose speaker differs from the Nokia speaker in Dammit's thread in that it has a 4 hole pattern and is screwed to a nylon/plastic holder/adapter that is screwed to the speaker housing with the 3 screws similar to the Nokia speaker in Dammit's photos.
I got out my dremmel and enlarged the circle in the nylon adapter, cut off the tangs on the Hertz speaker and stuck it in place with Polyurethane sealant. There wasn't any other way to do it and the sealant is by far strong enough to hold it in place.
The speaker wiring loom (same plug as the Nokia) is connected via spade connectors to the Bose main speaker but it is soldered to the original tweeter, so I left the original tweeter connected for now. I only had to remove the original loom negative wire spade connector and replace with a bigger spade to fit the Hertz negative spade. It is a simple job. The loom remains unchanged other than that.
I have only installed the front RH dash currently. The rear RH is sealant is drying. To test,put the fader all the way to the front and then moved the balance - not exactly scientific but enough to get a sense of it. The sound is much richer - less carboardy/hollow if that makes sense. The original amp seems to be driving it correctly as there isn't any difference in volume between the original and the Hertz and the original distorts sooner when i crank the volume up. Both the Hertz tweeter and the original tweeter are working.
I will get some more and better photos and update when it is all finished.
