Volt meter/ charging

What volts should the volt meter run at in normal use please?
My blowers on full with lights on will make the needle drop to around the 13 volts mark. Switch one off and the needle rises a little. Seems to me that the alternator should be able to keep up with both and run near 14 volts anyway?
Does anyone on here have a clue? Is it possible for an alternator to work but underperform? Seems a bit odd?
Thanks, John.

Should show 14v with full load - I.e. lights, rear demister, interior fan on full when driving. Less at idle

Dropping to 13v the way you describe could suggest voltage regulator is dying. It can be replaced. Lots of information on here - do a search and test the system.
