Cracked lcd on instrunt cluster

Hi all
I'm new to modern Porches have owned a couple or old ones and having just sold a 1967 912 I'm looking at a 997. I have found a car I like the look of but there is one potential snag.
So the car is
2006 carrera 4s 39000 miles and Porsche main dealer stamps every 2 years. It's fairly clean and the mot mileage is along the same lines. It's has the sports chrono gauges.
The potential issue is the the lcd on the speedo/trip is cracked. Also the seat on the drivers side has not excessive wear but a bit more wear on it than I would have thought. Now I could imagine that maybe the car has done a fair few short mile trips so the seat might wear a bit more. And as I say it's not massively worn and is 13 years old.
The lcd got me thinking though is this a common problem or does someone need to have taken the cluster out to have a mess around behind there?
Has anyone had this happen or heard of it before.
Any info would be great as it appears a nice car but probably top end on price so need it right.
Many thanks for your help
Doug

:welcome:

Hope the car works out for you :thumb:

Someone a lot older and cleverer will be along in a minute to help you

unsure how you could crack the display unless you were messing around in the cluster. If it feels wrong, just walk away, there are quite a few around. Excessive seat wear and damaged LCD set alarm bells ringing for me. Have you checked the MOT history on the DVLA site?

Aha! :duh:

He must have been trying to wind the clock back to adjust the mileage :bandit:

Thanks for the replies. I checked the dvla mot site and they all roughly tally up with the service history (there's 5 months difference so they are about there). The car is at a bmw main dealer so that gave me a bit more confidence, but I can't help wonder why the display is cracked, so wondered if it was a common problem.
I am guessing not.

Hi Doug,

The wear on the drivers bolster is very common and is usually caused by an unsympathetic ass / driver. I had the same on my car (and others), it is a simple DIY job to re-paint a small leather section of the seat.

If you really like the car but still have some concerns, I would strongly suggest paying for a 111 point check (pre-purchase inspection) by your local OPC. This will give you some peace of mind and the likely costs to repair the cracked screen. It will also give you enough information to negotiate the price down some more, or just walk away from a potential bad one! If you wanted to cover the car with an OPC warranty, you would need to pay for this check anyway (and make any non OEM changes / repairs deemed necessary).

Good luck!

Not an answer to the problem you describe, but I have a pal who had some dead pixels on his 987 boxster dashboard. It happened when the temperature dropped (car is parked outside). I've heard several others have this issue also.

The pixels came back in the spring when the weather got warmer. I can only imagine a cracked screen is going to exacerbate this problem.

A new display is ££££. Could be your negotiating lever? I don't think it's possible to fit a used one. Could ppf film be applied over it?

The mileage is remarkably low, these cars like to be used. That would put me off a little, especially combined with the lcd problem.

Hope that helps.

Does the screen resemble the picture? If so, then it's most likely a gremlin. Not the first time I've heard what you've described. Negotiate a replacement into the price, all other things being well.

That is exactly what it looks like but in the top left corner of that display. Some people call it a crack others leakage. The problem is at what temperature i mean it's pretty mild at the moment.
In the end I have basically said if it is cheap enough I will buy it but it had to be considerably cheaper. The mot had advisory's on the front and back discs as well.
The car is a 2006 with 39000 miles full Porsche history and a few options at £32500. I don't know values that well but that seems to me to be fairly strong money.

Personally if that's in budget I would be looking at a higher (70/80k) mileage Gen2.

That price is due to low miles. Which as you pointed out, don't mean it's in mint condition.

There are 6 Gen2 cars on Pistonheads between £30-35k (c2 is just as quick as a gen1 c2s)

So james m (help much appreciated) suggested the low mileage would put him off.
I kind off assumed that would be a good thing.
Can I ask for a bit of help here because I am greener than green on this.
With £30000 odd to spend what would be the perfect car, options mileage history. Just to give me something to aim for. I'm not talking colour or anything more any must haves.
So in my mind I would suggest 2007 sub 50000 miles full Porsche history and Bose. But I read about the hartage engine, of miles are to low, or Porsche specialist is better than Porsche. I am just thinking generally what should I shoot for without anything to specific.
I'm going to try to get over to rsj and have a look. I know I may pay a bit over but I hear good things. Although I would like a test drive.
Thanks for all your help. It's an education.

I figured a low mileage gen 1 car would be better than a gen 2 car with 70-80000. The only bit that I am fixed on is the 4s (don't ask long story). Is the gen 2 that much more desirable/better?
What year would be gen 2 is it 2009?

I would have a good read up on the differences between gen1 & Gen2.

will it be a weekend toy, so you won't be piling on the miles?
Are you buying for euro trips?
Are you buying as a keeper?
Are you buying as an investment?

Mine is a daily, but I also have a winter snotter (for when the salt is out).

I went with base spec Gen2 because:
I wanted reliability (I take the kids to school in it)
Inherent design probs with gen1 engine (I assume you know about intermediate main seal design changes/borescoring)
More modern interior
I prefer the look.
I thought it would be more desirable when the time eventually comes to sell.
I'm not that confident with the spanner's.

The gen 2 engine doesn't sound as nice as gen1.
Meant to not have as much character.

Its not common but it does happen .. not a crack but a break down of the LCD .. im not sure if there are companys out there that can fix it but i expect so .

A/C is the usual problem for this sort of thing .

To give you an idea .. i replaced a C4 996 cluster a while back .. £2500 new from Porsche .
