Has anyone fitted a reversing camera to a 996.1 by using a combined camera / number plate replacement unit? It seems to be a neat installation rather than drilling and bolting in the bumper.
As usual, I'm sure that there's a universal fit but I can't seem to find one.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks

There are plenty of number plate surround style ones on eBay.
I went for a small unit that I'm going to fit between the number plate lights.
What I'm REALLY interested in is how you do the wiring / routing of the cables!
I need to find an ignition switched power supply in the engine bay
Find a route through the bulkhead for the video feed
tap off from the reversing bulb to provide a signal to the head unit that the vehicle is in reverse (unless you all know of a signal I can tap into inside the cabin??)
So I've some thinking to do... Not quite at the "action" section just yet

Pull power off the reverse light feed from rear light loom so camera turns on when reversing, one option I considered When thinking about the same job was to fit using the wireless video transmitters you can also get on eBay rather than doing the cable run which I had done on a previous 911 for reverse sensor _________________ 1992 944 S2 Cabriolet, Cobalt Blue/Classic grey -gone!

The boot light feed has been mentioned on other posts for low amp items such as this.
Reverse light seems a pretty good solution though imho. _________________ .

The bootlight is ignition switched, is it? Ace, that would be an easy fix.
Yes, feeding the camera's power from the reversing light feed would work - but only when the car is in reverse.. (Yes, that's obvious!!) but there's an option to view the camera while going forward, so why not enable it?
I did look at trying to find the reverse signal wire that would feed the auto-dipping mirror (if I had one) that's supposedly comes out of the CPU under the passenger seat...
I couldn't find it though _________________ 996.2 Carrera 4 Convertible Tip

Im not sure if its ignition fed without testing but i know it has been mentioned on other posts when similar questions have been asked .. usually to do with cargraphic exhaust .
I remember it as its something i missed and didnt think of ..
Hell i cant know it all _________________ .

Ha! well it's easy enough to test and would be elegant solution if it works!
Thanks for the suggestion _________________ 996.2 Carrera 4 Convertible Tip

Let us know.. so we can learn by your mistakes!
I'm really not looking forward to routing through the engine firewall / bulkhead! _________________ 996.2 Carrera 4 Convertible Tip

As per PM .. wiring if needed ..
Red/Green A2 .. 1.5 mm wire and you need to fuse it ... cab only . _________________ .

Do these cameras flip or pop open to stop the accumulation of dirt on the lens or is it up to you to keep the lens clean at all times. Wouldn't it be a P.I.T.A in winter _________________ 997.2 Carrera 2S GT Silver/Cocoa.

Ive fitted a system to a 981 .. its a fixed lens .. pretty small to be fair but it would collect dirt i guess .. wipe it with a cloth now and then _________________ .

Hi Iain
Do you mean that TERM 30 feed is a constant live? So it would be always on? The camera uses 24W / 2A max and the wires provided with it are p1ss thin so the draw is pretty minimal, so the TERM 15 might be fine?
Than you for posting the diagram - hugely helpful! _________________ 996.2 Carrera 4 Convertible Tip

You CAN get all sorts of clever systems - but I paid £8.29 for mine, so it's... basic
So yes, it will get dirty - but's IP67 so nothing the odd hose-down won't fix _________________ 996.2 Carrera 4 Convertible Tip

The term 30 is always on but the unit in operation in theory would not use it .
Term 30 = permanent feed .
The term 15 is a bit of a weak feed at 0.5 wire so it would have to be a very small current to use this wire and so i cant be sure on this one.
Term 15 is ignition on .
2 amp .. a bit more than i would like on this wire .
Reverse light wire is an option and i think i would be happier if you used this .
Bear in mind im not doing the work or fixing these cars so i try to maintain a safety aspect even though it may not be needed . _________________ .

No worries Iain
I have the option of using a known "good" ignition switched feed at the Head unit - but the feed for the reversing bulb is starting to look more and more simple and straight-forward
And I'm all for removing faff from the equation! _________________ 996.2 Carrera 4 Convertible Tip

Here is the thread for fitting my switchable exhausts - in it Demort gives the details for a switched live in the engine bay taking a splice off the lambda sensors at the main loom plug.....
http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=116061&highlight=
.....it stays live for a while after shut down but in 2 years has never given me any issues.

I started doing this based on the instructions here https://cai-store.com/pages/911-backup-camera-installation-overview . They suggest taking a feed from the reversing lights, obviously means the camera is only powered when you engage reverse, some seem to want to be able to use it when driving so would need a switched feed.
I got as far as running a hole through the grommet into the passenger compartment, but then found I was trying to feed a wire into the sound insulation above the rear wheel area. Apparently there is some space for feeding wires into. I had to stop at that point and just get the rest of the head unit etc fitted, I haven’t had a chance to try again.
Has anyone got a tip on running the wire into the right place?
Once it is into the passenger compartment the rest appears to be relatively simple (probably means it won’t be now!).
