Temp guage not working on 997.1 turbo

My temperature gauge stopped working. It seemed intermittent at first and followed a pipe coming loose on the underside of the car. I assumed there must be air in the system, so I kept the coolant topped up and opened the bleeder valve. The temperature gauge would sometimes work when the engine was hot but eventually it has stopped working altogether.

I ordered a replacement temperature sender, and although it was quite a difficult job to change have managed to get it out and the new one in. The problem still remains. Any ideas? :?

After quite a while of trying to bleed the system with the car backed up on a ramp I gave up and went for a drive.

About 20 minutes later (on the way to my local specialist) it sprung into life.
Once I got to the specialist they read the error codes on their equipment. They seemed to show slightly more information than the Durametric that I was using although at the time there was no current faults, only greyed out faults which were apparently stored from the past but not present at that time. The faults were cleared, and I drove home, with instructions to check the next day when the car was cold. Needless to say, its worked perfectly ever since.

I suppose the moral of the story is:- do not give up, trust your own ability to fix it yourself and if your doing this job.... the car needs to be driven to properly bleed the system :D

Good Job :thumb:

No doubt DeMort will be along shortly but I'd always understood they needed a pressure-fill and then burping & topping up after a drive.

997.1 turbo coolant issue..,. have you got the coolant lines pinned?
