996 tt exhaust - Blowing at the silencer?

Hi all,

Been a member for a while now but I' not one for being overly active on the threads I will hold my hands up to that.

I've owned a 996tt 03 plate for just short of a year now and its been awesome. Recently I started to hear an unfamiliar blowing sound from the back left of the car so decided to get it checked out by a Porsche specialist near me.

Well the results are in, and apparently my exhaust is blowing at the silencers and they have even sent me a little video if it, which is nice. However, they are quoting me as the OEM part being £3600 + fitting. When I do a trawl of the internet I can literally find nothing that comes close to that other than a full cat-back system.

Is anyone able opt shed some light on what exactly it is that is costing that kind of price?

They have suggested I could go aftermarket but the car is completely OEM stock and given many buyers (myself included) are a little adverse to 'upgrades' I can't say I'm all that keen on the idea.

Any help/advise would be appreciated :) Thanks.

I have a stock 996 turbo exhaust with catalysts removed at 21k miles when 9 years old. I will sell it just haven't got around to it yet. Excellent condition. PM me if interested.

A pair of Porsche original silencers are over 2k plus vat for a C2 and the PSE variety over 2.5k plus vat so I'm not that surprised at the price.

I would go stainless replacement. If you sell it and the buyer wants original exhausts they can easily fit them.

Top Gear get great reviews and are great value.

This is a turbo, not a Carrera.

I have a nice Top Gear exhaust for a 996T up for sale - not stock but a LOT cheaper than the one that the OPC quoted you!

I realise that I was just pointing out that Porsche OE exhausts are expensive, then linked to a Turbo exhaust at Top Gear

If you can post your video it might help , i expect the garage is correct but at least we can confirm that if you wish .

If you cant post then email ..

[email protected]

With it and ill post it via youtube .

As Demort says it would be good to see vid

I've been reading this site for 10 years and can't recall anyone with a turbo having the standard exhaust system fail, but they are getting older so maybe yours has!

What is very common however is the studs and nuts rotting away until there's nothing left and it starts blowing at the flanges. It would be good just to rule this out, however that would also mean the garage is trying to rip you off and I'm sure they aren't!

If it is the exhaust as you've already found out a good condition used stock one will be easy to come by .

By the way the stock exhaust system is all one piece and includes the cats which is the reason a replacement from Porsche is so expensive!

Just had another thought, it might be possible to get it welded up if it's just a crack for example. The normally aspirated guys on here do it all the time! :dont know:

Hi everyone,

Really appreciate all the responses and input.

I've added a few screenshots from the video, didn't want to include the full monty as it includes some personal info etc.

From the comments it looks like the reason they are looking at a full replacement is because the flanges/fixtures and fittings are all corroded which they do state in the video.

...best dig out the cheque book then :)

That just looks like the normal corrosion of the fittings and heat shield etc, I've replaced all these on my car myself.

It's still not clear from your pics if there is actually a fault with the exhaust system itself or if it's just the fittings which need replacing.Does the quote specifically mention a new exhaust system or is it just to replace the fittings?

My car looked similar to yours but after taking it apart the flange faces ie the bit where the seals are were ok so non of the big bits needed replacing, it was just the fittings themselves that needed doing

Even if it is just the fittings it's still a lot of work as to get to the studs in your first pic the turbos often need removing which can then make a load more work as the pipes to the turbo and their catch tanks underneath will also be corroded solid and will probably need replacing too!

Put it this way if I was going to do this job involving replacing all the corroded fittings and heat shields around the turbos and exhausts I'd want 3 grand too!

Also beware that once apart it can often be the case that the turbo themselves are so corroded they need a rebuild so it's very easy to end up with an eye watering bill, it's really wasn't one of Porsche's best ideas to put the turbos low down behind the rear wheels!!

Wow that is a truly eye-watering bill.

If you do get it verified that the exhaust does need replacement, we sell an exhaust for 996TT which also includes cats (one-piece). Cats are 200 cell but these still go through emissions and MOT etc. fine.

Stainless steel, lifetime guaranteed, £990 including VAT (or £900 with the 911UK coupon code). We would fit it for £1500 all in.

I've just had all my turbo>header and header>head studs replaced with Titanium items. My indy charged a massively reasonable 8 hours for what I thought would have taken much longer (9 of them sheared).

As others have said, the job can grow arms and legs in a bad way, resulting in a lot of parts/labour.

I've also got a std rear box with cats sitting in the shed, just never got round to selling it.

8 hrs, think you got yourself a bargain there! It took me a couple of Sunday's and 4 or 5 evenings to do mine lol!!!
