So I'm down to a choice of two on the shortlist. The search for a manual 3.4 cable throttle with aero and M030 and LSD and black leather was fruitless - ended up at a 3.6 with no aero

Candidate 1:

2003 car
90k
Atlas grey
Black leather

Pros - hardbacks, Dansk exhaust, new disks and pads and condensers and brake lines. Turbo style wheels (my fave 996 OEM wheel) BOSE,
Condition of this car is outstanding

Cons - 8 owners, at the very top of the budget,

Candidate 2:

2002 car
90K
Black on Black

Pros: 1 owner, full stamped Porsche history and one specialist who are the seller too. 4 grand cheaper than the Atlas car

Cons: No hardback seats, standard exhaust, nowhere near as clean, has the 5 spoke Carrera alloys (yack), unsure of any evidence of remedial work such as clutch, condensers etc etc, needs a windscreen to due chip/crack (which I may be able to get under Insurance later)

So I'm at a crossroads - 4 grand is a lot of money and pays for hardbacks and a Gundo hack on the exhaust and puts more into the borkage fund. One owner and the history is a draw, however the Atlas Grey is so so very clean and tidy and wont need a penny spending (hopefully) for a while

What say you Porsche gurus?

and then put an aerokit on it?

loads of copy ones out there and plenty of 3.4 manuals out there with MO30 and LSD options.

New discs, pads, condensers and brake lines could quickly eat into your £4k saving, so I'd want to be sure they were OK on the black car, not to mention the cost of getting it up to the spec you want... the wheels/tyres could be another £1k alone.

Have a drive of both, if you can, see which one feels better.

I am unsure on the whole 'owners' thing... in my experience, work tends to get done when traders sell cars. Just because a car has had one owner does not mean it has been well maintained.

Hi

I promise you both cars will need money spending on them.

Coffin arms, top mounts, rusted brake pipes, coils, (possible clutch) etc.

Could you post links to the adverts? That might help people give some advice?

I would be more interested in the underside of the car being in good nick than the bodywork being "clean". You can detail the paint of the car to make it clean as you say.

Exhaust on the non dansk car may also need the seams welded, or you could have some topgear boxes put on for around £600 fitted. https://www.topgear.co.uk/

At the end of the day, I would advise you follow your heart when buying a Porsche. It may hurt in the long run, but at least you wont spend the whole time thinking about the one that got away....

Your wish list of a 996.1 was very specific and that car may therefore take many months to find. Why have you given up on a 996.1 and gone with a 996.2? There are 996.1 aero cars out there and some non aero cars to which you could add the aero, there are C4s too. Are you perhaps compromising too much just because you have the money burning a hole in your pocket and can't wait for the right car? What is your budget? As has been said all 996s will need money spending on them, no matter what the vendor says or how shiny the car is.

I wanted a well cared for low mileage aerokitted 996.1 with a black interior. Ideally I wanted a C2, I got everything I wanted, plus it was in Zanzibar Red, but as a compromise it is a C4 (whose shell the GT3 used of course).

I bought my 04 C2 from ADW and found them to be very particular about the detail of the car. Mine was immaculately presented and had everything done to it. In the two years that I have had it I have only changed the oil and filter and put petrol in. So far so good! No connection to the company.

yes you should not give up on car you have in your mind as you can ended up with car you will not enjoy in 100%, not so long ago this car was up for sale for £13K not perfect but £3k in pocket for any work, I was ready to buy it but got my dream car C4S

I was in the same position a year ago. Ideally I wanted a 3.4 C2 with low miles, low owners, perfect history, black sports interior. I spent weeks looking at various cars. Not one single car was exactly what I wanted, but in the end something popped up that was, bar the sports interior, pretty much perfect. I bought it the same day the ad appeared.
My advice, for what its worth, would be to persevere and be patient. Something is bound to crop up.
I know the dealer had a little bit of bad press recently, but this looks good, especially with the recent engine work.

Northway have a very good rep (and I think Ray Northway is top bloke) and in my opinion are always less interested in making a car look shiny and more interested in making it mechanically sound.

I personally don't know ADW, but alfazagato seems to be happy with them.

If you are sure about wanting a 996.2, then go and see both. There are lots of higher mileage 996.2 about which have been run on a shoestring, so IMHO buying from a reputable dealer like them is a good idea.

Good luck!

That interior is a bit grim.....
