Last post here was over 6 years ago! However if anyone is still alive, how do I tell the difference between aluminium 911 crankcases and magnesium cases?

I now know how to tell, pour some vinegar on the cases if it bubbles it's magnesium.

Indeed your spot on most of the time vinegar will have an immediate reaction and fizz away.

If you are want you could file off a nice small pile of dust and set light to it, it goes up without any real trouble with a match.

Very early 1964 to approx 66/67 cases were sand cast aluminium. Mag cases were then used up to 2.7 litres. SC cases onwards were aluminium. Years might be slightly out but give a ball park. 993 cases will be aluminium.

The cases I'm working with are magnesium, unfortunately! Thanks for the replies.
