I'm driving five races at the Nurburgring this year, if you're in the area, come into the Manheller garage (normally garage 17) and say hi.

14th April
9th June
14th July

Two other dates to be confirmed.

Thanks guys, hopefully have a lot of fun with my German friend and team mate. The RCN is 15 laps, around 315 Km, the VLN is four hours.

I’m doing three RCN and two VLN races.

Well done and good luck Thumb will be out there a few times this year for TD’s but those dates dont quite match up unfortunately. Went to one a couple of years ago. The pit walk was somewhat insane Floor

I've just returned home from the long weekend away at the 'ring. Had a really good first race, was very intense but got the car back in one piece without any big moments! Very Happy

There were 169 cars in the race, 22 in our class and we finished 9th, very very happy.

On target to get my licence upgrade in July.

Excellent

Is that a page for the race results ?

You mentioned a licence upgrade, what do you have at the moment and what are you upgrading to ?

Thanks. Thumb

Yes, results available here.

I currently have a DMSB (German licence) National A. I need to do a minimum of three RCN races and then I can upgrade to get a Nordschleife permit B which is required for VLN. It’s all very confusing, I leave it to the team to advise me what I need to do, it’s even more confusing because of the language barrier! Very Happy

It’s explained a bit better here, but unfortunately even this isn’t totally accurate.

That was a good effort indeed Thumb

I watched an hour live on the stream but couldn't pick out your car (soooo many BMWs), it looked like a great day to go racing at the Nordschleife.

Thanks Mike, everything went to plan and the weather was perfect for the race, 16'C dry and partly cloudy.

Seven weeks until my next race, although may be over there with the team for the 24 Hour on 12th May.

The RCN races are quite unique in two ways, you're allowed a passenger and you have to do timed 'set lap' that you have to replicate twice after. My friend and teammate Jens has been driving RCN and VLN for four years so it was decided that he would drive the car first.

The outlap is a timed one, Jens' experience decided that it would be a reasonable pace one, I sat in the passenger seat with a stopwatch noting down our pre-agreed points and the times we arrived. After this lap it was up to full race speed. Being a passenger for 6 full-on laps wasn't easy, not because of the speed or G generated by the slick tyres, just that my breakfast I'd eaten 6 hours earlier wanted to show itself to everyone viewing the onboard (and live) camera! Jens' final lap was then driven at as close a time as the first lap with me directing him to go faster or slower to match the previous set time.

We then came in for the driver change, into the pitlane and then our box/garage, there's no frantic rush, quite a casual change over, the team were fantastic, opening doors for us, unbelting and then belting us up, plugging in the helmet radio, adjusting seat and swapping our water hydration system (just a posh water bottle!).

I'm sitting there at this point as per the photo above, talking to Jens, the team on the radio and waiting for the sign to start the engine and drive away.

I'll point out here that this is the first time I've ever driven the car, I only sat in it the day before, never even started the engine before! Now I have to drive it out of the pitlane and into race conditions, my adrenaline was sky high.

The first lap was at 90%, the following 5 at race speed and the last lap is where I had to try and match Jens' set time. So in total, the race is 15 laps, around 315 Km/195 miles. Our car is not in the fastest or slowest class, so a lot over overtaking was done as well as being overtaken, you're looking everywhere, one moment there's nothing behind you, then 2 seconds later there's a Cayman GT4 wanting to pass. The only bit of rest you get is the long drag down Dottinger Hohe, this is the time to relax a little even though the speedo is showing 240 Kmh/150 MPH before you brake for Am Tiergarten.

Then the team radio'd to come in and to the park ferme where they would meet us. Parking up and switching the car off was quite a relief, we got the car (and ourselves) back in one piece and we had completed our first race together that we had been planning for four years!

We felt we drove a good first race, but wouldn't find out the results until they were published at 1900, a couple of hours later.

I was buzzing, Jens was buzzing, the team were happy and we were getting attention from the media as the British/German driver partnership. There were two TV style cameras around us, I looked over and Jens was speaking in German to one and then it pointed at me and asked (in English) how the race went.

We then walked back to our garage, sat with the team, drank a litre of water and reflected on the last few hours.

Jens was a lot more relaxed at this time than I was, I was hovering around on cloud 9 whereas he had had four years learning how to control his excitement! Very Happy

We then went to the results presentation, obviously very apprehensive to find out we had finished 9th out of our class of 22 entries, 169 starters.

We were ecstatic, the team were happy and there was a lot of man hugging going on! Very Happy Surprised

It took me two days to calm down, still a lot of reflection and how to improve running through my head, but it was an experience I'll never forget.

Roll on our next RCN race 9th June. VLN booked (pending licence upgrade) for 18th August, now that'll be a different ballgame trying to keep out of the way of charging GT3 group cars!
