2006 Porsche 997 GT3

PostPosted: Tue Feb 20, 2018 1:56 pm    Post subject: Resonance at 3000-3200 rpm Reply with quote

At my recent CG clinic slot, they picked up on what they thought could be a chassis related resonance, but after further investigation at the work visit, they found it was drivetrain. Using their listening device they narrowed it down to the clutch/flywheel area at 3000-3200rpm, whether the car was moving/stationary/in-gear/neutral/clutch-in/clutch-out.

I hadn't noticed it as this is my first GT3 and I wasn't expecting it to be as smooth as a Carrera, but my ocd now can't ignore it. Going through the gears you don't really notice it, but when holding speed, at around 75mph in 6th with cruise control for example, it can be felt. I haven't read that these engines do this at that rev so Im assuming there's an issue.

The clutch and flywheel are only 2000 miles old, but I do remember when parking at a PCGB event last year in a field with plenty of slope on it, the clutch did get hot and smelly with some smoke in the air. I wasn't happy with that happening and made sure I didn't ride the clutch again, but there didn't seem to be any ill-effects.

That said, I'm now wondering if it could have been enough to heat-warp anything. I've also read that if a flywheel isn't torqued evenly it may wobble a tad. Obviously having this looked at and possibly having another new clutch and/or flywheel put in is going to be expensive and a waste if it isn't the cause. I would appreciate views, many thanks.

That sounds terminal to me unfortunately.

To soften the blow I'll take it off your hands for £300 and a bag of Worther's?

996 turbo - slightly modified....
986 S - usually in pieces: http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=112626
