I am looking at purchasing a 911/977 Targa and would be grateful if you have any advise as this is my first Porsche.

Looking at models from 2008 - 2010 however have no idea whether the face lift in mid 08 is the better of the two and manual or auto.

Any advise you can give as experts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome!

In summary, pre facelift (Gen 1 or 997.1) cars are brilliant, but the engines can have issues with so called bore scoring. Plenty on this site about it without going into depth here, suffice to say it does not affect all cars, but to remedy it requires expensive engine work. So, best advice is to have a good PPI with a borescope which will inspect the condition of the cylinder bores.

Gen 2 or 997.2 cars do not have this issue as they have a different DFI engine but cost quite a bit more, so you pays your money etc.

Gen 2 cars have the PDK double clutch 7 speed auto box, whereas the .1 has the tiptronic conventional auto. Only you will know which you prefer... have a drive of both, and a manual.

Another decision to make is whether you want the 4 or more powerful 4S.

Good hunting

:welcome: to 911uk Joe.

Well done for finding this forum before buying your first Porsche. :thumb:

Targa roof aside the 997 Targa is the same as any other 997 Carrera so have a good read of the 997 sub-forum to research all general issues.

If your budget allows it's generally considered 'safer' to go for a Gen2 car so model year 2009 onwards.

Happy Hunting.
