Morning all,

My distinctly average Peugeot estate company car goes back in 8 weeks and I'm going back to take the cash allowance and buy my own car.

Looking for something alittle special and the XJ has taken my fancy. I had a VW Phaeton previously which was an amazing car but they are now pretty old tech. The Jag looks great and the 3L TD goes well it seems with 275hp and 0-60 in not much over 6 secs with decent mpg.

anyone had one or experience of one? I'm also drawn to the LWB version the XJL as they are not much more. Seems for mid 20's you can get a 3-4 year old car with 30k miles which was £70K+ new.

The German offerings of BMW and Merc don't really do it for me!

cheers,

Giles.

I run an XJ 5.0V8 (SWB) in Portfolio spec as my daily and in almost three years it has been as good if not better than my previous BMW daily's. Servicing and tyres is all the car has required.
Effortless performance with a decent auto box. More toys than I know what to do with, although the heated massaging seats and heated steering wheel are a godsend in the winter months. Interior is a lovely place to be, however there are some questionable colour choices out there. Mine is Piped Black Leather with Carbon Trim which gives a sporty look.

Handles well for a big car and the ride is excellent even on the 20's my car runs on. IIRC the XJ is a similar weight to the smaller XF, mainly due to the aluminium body as opposed to steel used on the smaller cars.

Thanks Cableguy,

yes the XJL is quite light as all aluminium construction which I guess helps the performance figures. the 5.0L supercharged in the XJL looks lovely but might just upset the company car checkers my end and my wallet with fuel....

Portfolio spec or Premium Luxury is what I'm going to be looking at. For example a LWB in rhodium silver on a 15 plate with 11k miles is £26K before haggling so some nearly new cars to be had. past 2013 they got the 8 speed auto which I understand is good.

how is leg-room in the SWB as still a good sized car?? Likely SWB would be fine for me but the LWB appeals to me as looks like the car is alittle more 'stretched' to my eye.....

need to go and see a couple side by side I think to inform.

Hi Giles,

Rear legroom is adequate in the SWB. Two adults are comfortable on longer journeys and more than adequate for my 7 year old and his cousins. It's a handsome car in the right colour, preferably a darker colour as the Black "C" Pillars tend to look awkward in the lighter colours IMO.
I wasn't keen on the LWB as it looked a little too stretched for my liking but opinions will always vary. ;)

My only criticism about the car is its all-round visibility, particularly out the heavily raked rear window. It has a high hip line with a small glass area. The parking sensors and rear view camera are worth their weight in gold when parking.

Mine is a pre-facelift car and the 6 speed gearbox is good. I'm the sure the 8 speed on the later cars will be even better. They really are a lot of car for the money...

mate of mine, who's also my accountant, has one - been in it several times. It performs brilliantly.

I'm 6' 1" and he's taller than me and has no problem with leg or headroom

Please load up loads of piccies when you have bought her.

Thanks both,

Yes tons of car for the money! What's not to like when a £75k odd car can be had for £25 barely run in. The performance for a diesel also looks fantastic!!

agree the dark colour looks nice, also like the light blue though. Seems 80% have light interiors which would be a change.

as and when I get one will post it up!

Ok have been to a dealer with a LWB and SWB side by side to compare.

definitively answers my question that it's going to have to be the LWB. I must have long legs and a short body as at 6ft 1 when I was in a comfortable driving position there was little leg room behind me in the SWB, was alittle shocked actually.

The cars do reek of quality though and very nice place to be. I'll drive a couple once I'm nearer to making a purchase but the dealer thinks they are the value point for the Jags (surprise..) but it does seem a lot of car for the money!!

Must now find a Jag forum so I can do some full diligence. some cars from specialists are touching those from approved Jag dealers where you get the 24month warranty which is quite attractive!

Absolutely

See => Phew

My Jag warranty runs out on Monday and I won't be renewing. Last week I made my second claim in 24 months ..... for a £400 TPMS control box.

I've got fingers and toes crossed for the future.

I have the same 3.0l TD engine in my XF portfolio S which I have had mapped up to 320bhp, the torque is impressive to say the least. I normally get about 40-44mpg on a heavy footed run and if I go sensible I have got over 50mpg , it a lovely car with a great interior and very well made. The only down side is that the satnav is shocking and you can't change the head unit as it also does your climate control and heated seats. This is only a minor point on a fantastic car with a great engine and Google maps on my phone sorts that.

Thanks guys,

the warranty is a good question. I think you get 6 months anyway under your consumer rights but a lot of dealers offer a 6 month warranty as standard (AA etc); seems then its more for their protection than ours.....

will seriously consider the approved route, trouble is they don't tend to have so many LWB in stock or they are newer and out of price range.

as with any new car the chase is half the fun!

I kept mine for 7 months only ... XJL 3.0 TD Portfolio ... lovely car but local dealer is absolutely terrible - no interest in unhappy customers ... watch out for corrosion at bottom of doors and on chromed wheels

OK to update here looks like I have now found the right car!

Having viewed a few from various non-Jag dealers which whilst nice were priced high, I managed to find one at a Jag dealer and as a late 2013 qualifies for their approved scheme meaning I get the 2-year full Jag warranty which should give some peace of mind.

Car is a Portfolio LWB in quite a rare colour of caviar metallic which is dark red and seems to change in the light to hues of purple and black....

Car is an ex-Jag car with another private owner. Viewed last Friday, did the deal and pick up this Thursday coming hopefully. Interior looked literally like new on its 35k miles and the exterior also very nice. Will look forward to the 100 mile trip back from Bristol to learn about the car.

Pics to follow once I can get some decent ones!

cheers,

Giles.

Here's the new steed finally collected.

Caviar red, XJL in Portfolio spec with ivory piped leather and mocha/truffle upper interior with extended leather literally everywjhere with 35k miles. About £73k list and had for a third of that so a bargain in my eyes with a 2year approved Jag warranty. Goes nicely for a big car aswell with the V6 diesel engine 8)

The 4S will be getting jealous as this got cleaned first.....

Thats a lot of car... very nice!
Ive seen the royal family wafting around in XJLs in that colour.

You won't be disappointed, I bought my Mrs the XJ portfolio and we both have fell in love with it, however... The car is just too big for her to drive, parking in mutli-story car parks etc. Is a no no , so unfortunately I've had to put it up for sale and get her a Mini Countryman

The XJ is probably the best car I've ever owned period but there's no way I'd keep it over my 997 lol
