Im thinking of viewing a car thats up for private sale that has had nearly £4.5k of engine work done by Cath Burrows independent Porsche specialist in Wigan in 2014.

Has anyone heard of this garage and can anyone tell me if they have a good rep.

The description of the works carried out are:

Remove engine and gearbox. Strip engine complete. Modify crank carrier to supply extra oil to both banks. Rebuild engine with new seals throughout. Fit new O.E. clutch and new tandem pump. Remove front bumper and fit genuine centre radiator kit. Re gas air con system.

Ive done a google search and cant find anything relating to modifying crank carrier to supply extra oil to both banks. Can anyone tell me if thats a known mod for a 997 and if so is that done to reduce the risk of bore score or is it done for some other reason?

As always any advise you can give to a newbie will be gratefully received.

Cath is a complicated character in so many ways but her technical knowledge is second to none.
Give her a call and if you catch her on a good day she will give you a full and comprehensive run down.

Im guessing theyve bored out the crank case to increase oil volume around the crank shaft and main bearings

Seems like a good idea if oil starvation is a problem

The crank carrier holds the crankshaft central in the crankcases and I'm not sure modifying something this critical without lots of research and development is a good idea and does it rob the bearings of some oil pressure?
I'm guessing the Ladder Casting Modification on the invoice is the crank carrier mod?? Would like to know what they did, nothing at all on Google?

Also why was it rebuilt, sounds like the only work was to carry out this modification, very strange?

I'm also curious why they charged for, 2x crankcase half gaskets (as there is no such thing) and also charged for Loctite 5900 as this is the sealant that does the sealing of the crankcases? Could they mean coolant channel seals?

This could be a very interesting thread if more info becomes avail, as already said nothing on the internet about it or what it is designed to achieve. I havent heard anything bad about Cath Burrows and many say shes up there with the best of them.
Now I want to know what this mod is designed to achieve :dont know: so will stay here    :stay:

+1!

I called her out of the blue when buying my 996. I'd never heard of her before but chanced picking her brain. We had a really good chat over the phone and she advised me on what to look for and what common problems there was with the 996. It really took me back how helpful she was and how much time she gave me over the phone. If it wasn't for her I may not have made the leap.

.........just don't mention Bradley Wiggins  :wack:

The question I'm thinking is, why the engine rebuild in the first place?

No mention of cylinder re lining or ims bearing or timing chains etc.

I know I wouldn't pay 4.5 k just for an engine mod when you could put that money toward bullet proofing it .

Strange.

Strange.

The 'mod' was the cheap bit looking at the bill. New Clutch, centre Radiator & Tandem Pump swallowed a fair chunk.

The question is, was this a recommended or requested modification to negate future issues, as this also included a third rad and crank cage mod? These were the only mods that can affect the engine, the rest were just gaskets. clutch and labour (and 15 cans of brake cleaner)

I noticed that too. Must be some pro-biotic workplace 'pick-me-up'
