So I'm looking st a 997.
Had a few emails back from the dealer and I'm happy so far with it.
Checked and it has the later IMS nearing so that's ok.
Asked them about borescoring and this is there reply....

We are known for our Porsche's here (particularly 911's) and this example has just come from specialist where we had a service carried out along with health check.

We only carry out a scope reading once a buyer has viewed/driven then requested this and we are happy to oblige. However no signs of any scoring following it's service/health check and usually there are tell tell signs from experience.

Now I'd like like to get an independent specialist (as advised by a member on here, cheers Phil)to do a PPI and borescope on it. I'd be happy to 50:50 with them on the cost of this.
What other
Things could I expect them to replace if they show up up on the ppi.

So can anyone out there word me an email stating reasonable term and conditions I could ask for.
The car also will come with a 3 month Warranty, but no idea to what level.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Hello mate. I am also looking for a 997.

Re the warranty. Sales of goods act will cover you for 6 months.

However its best to resolve any issues with the dealer directly rather than following that route, should any issues arise.

Also find out what the claim limit is for the 3 month warranty if it is something around 1k limit per claim. This will not cover Engine and gearbox issues.

Which engine 3.6 or 3.8?

Good luck

A decent PPI should flag up anything that is

(a) Urgent. Needs immediate replacement/repair eg. leaks, MOT failure items, worn out clutch

and

(b) Advisory. Might need replacing in the near future eg. brake pad thickness, tyre wear

I'd expect anything in category (a) to be fixed by the supplier prior to taking collection of the car and to be agreed to before any negotiation regarding the purchase price.

Any things flagged up as category (b) will need discussing individually with the supplier and a contribution towards the potential replacement/repair cost negotiated accordingly.

IMO (a) should be a given but (b) depends upon the dealer and how much sales margin they have in the car.

Any warranty that doesn't have a decent single claim or total claim limit is pretty worthless on a Porsche.

Good Luck :thumb:

Im not sure id expect a dealer to pay anything towards a PPI which I wanted on a car. Id expect to pay all the costs of that myself, then use the results as a bargaining chip on the purchase price if anything is flagged up.

It's the 3.8 :D

Which dealer is it?

Which specialist has it been too?

That will answer a lot of questions. For example Specialist Cars of Malton or Hendon Way Motors.

PPI

I think rabbitstew has summed it up very succinctly.

A PPI is something at a prospective buyer's request and at his cost. The findings of the PPI can then be used as a bargaining point, if necessary, but with the proviso that if the seller is unwilling to make favourable adjustments to the deal you must be prepared to walk away and suffer the loss of the cost of the PPI.

I would check as much as I could on the car before paying for a PPI and then make sure the person conducting the examination knows what they are doing! We all have different ideas of what is important. Obviously all the major items need to be sound and fit for purpose but some would overlook a blemish on the bodywork that others would feel important. I know one Indie who notes down significant stone chips on the bodywork when carrying out PPI checks!

Hello Millsy71,

I saw in your first post that you were looking for a car like mine except you want a cab.
Mine is 997.1 C4S Meteor Grey Metalic, Bose, PSE, Alcantara, heated seats etc etc. I've had it coming up 4 years now and love it.

Who are you potentially buying from? I'm in Sunderland, I get my servicing done at D&G in Tynemouth (Silverlink). I may be able to give you some hints and tips since I went through the same process when buying.

You can do a "Listening" check before a full PPI and Bore scope and the 3 month warranty needs to be a "fully inclusive" one. e,g. I had a £20 clutch switch go after one month and also found out that the tyre pump was missing. Both were replaced no questions asked by the garage I bought from. (A690 cars at Durham).

Let me know if you need some help,

cheers
John

This is understandable. So surely now it's time to show your intent and arrange the viewing and test drive and then you can request the scope inspection. I'd also be asking who does their servicing and health checks and ask for a copy of the report. And it would be interesting to see what they believe are the tell-tale signs of bore score.

If they're many miles from you then other questions may need answering before a potentially wasted journey (no point travelling 300 miles to find out it's "our own warranty with a £500 claim limit and you must return the car to us for our assessment"), so:
Who is the warranty with?
What's covered?
Is there any excess to pay?
What's the claim limit?
Is there a limit on the number of claims?
Can you take it to any garage of your choosing (and if so, do they cap labour rates)?
Can you extend the warranty either now or at the end of the period?
You could ask them if they're prepared to share the cost of a PPI (although they will likely decline).

So you could then discuss what they'd be prepared to do regarding remedial work discovered to be required. A bit tricky to get a clear answer to this based on unknowns, but their response may give an indication as to how they would approach any future issues (and how they treat you as a customer).

As an aside and to clarify, there's no such thing as the Sale of Goods Act. It was replaced with the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and when it comes to relying on the CRA2015, used cars are something of a grey area – yes, you do have a level of protection, but the fault must be deemed to have been present at the time of sale (which depending on what it is, could feasibly be proven otherwise). Warranties cover major mechanical failure and as such are well worth having (you can get wear and tear warranties but they are very expensive). Relying on litigation, mediation etc will likely be long and drawn out and probably quite stressful. In short, where possible obtain a decent warranty, it is quite simply the easiest way of resolving unforeseen failures on used vehicles.

Response from the garage ...........

Hi Paul,

we would send to the specialist "EPorsche" who we have no affiliation with. We just send all our Porsche's to them for servicing.

If you wish to have the inspection carried out you may send a specialist to us at your cost. We would not be looking to contribute to any inspection as I could not justify it unless I had a concern of my own in which case we would have had one done by now.

Warranty - we use the leaders "Warrantywise" and this can be extended past 3 months (6, 12, 24 etc) if you wish to pay the small amount to do this. You are covered up to the entire value of vehicle and single repair limit is £1,000.

You can use any VAT registered garage or independent so long as the labour falls within the specified amount £50 (can increase if you wish).

As is always the case John it's a dealer 300+ mile away.

And yes I called into D&G, I'll be getting it serviced there. They have a canny reputation

1k limit leaves you in a no better position than buying from a private seller.

Hi Milsy,

I bought a 964 from Roly Baldwin at Eporsch.

I would not hesitate in asking him to do PPI. Why not ring him for a chat about the car?

Cheersa, Keith.

And the dealer says "we're known for our Porsches here"??? How can they sell any car of this value with a warranty claim limit of £1000 with a straight face??? A fairly pointless warranty on such a car! They should be able to increase the claim limit for a small additional charge (generally around £25+VAT per £1000 increase). The fact that they don't, to my mind, just shows them to be more interested in their margins than the ongoing satisfaction / welfare of the customer. In my opinion cars of this nature and value (especially where certain issues are prevalent and costly to remedy) should have a minimum of a £5k claim limit (ideally more). And the labour rate is low too. Hopefully their comment "can increase if you wish" refers to both claim limit and labour rate.

If they're known for their Porsches, and claim to know the cars well then even common sense would dictate that they should be slapping healthy warranties on the cars - the warranty is often just as much peace of mind for the dealer as it is for the customer.

May be worth doing some research to find other customers who've bought from them - it's nice to hear "I bought a car from them and it's been great" but what separates the good from better (or bad) dealers is when things go wrong, so it can be comforting to hear "I bought a car from them and had issues which were resolved quickly and at no cost to me!"

Warrantywise don't have the best reputation, but to be fair all warranty companies have their fair share of disgruntled customers with failed claims.

Cheers for all these replies chaps. It all help

And even I thought the warranty was a bit of a token gesture.
I'll do a bit of research on the garage and see if I can find anything.
Also might speak to Roly at Eporsh

I'll get there!!
