Where would i start looking for a used 996 3.6 2003 model auto tiptronic gearbox ECU please? My car has been with the auto box repair centre for six weeks now and that is what they have traced the fault to be and without bothering to tell me have spent three weeks looking for......how hard can it be? Thanks in advance, John.

Try scrapyard breakers. Cant see a high probability of buying just the ECU as they will sell the complete tiptronic box.

Failing that, its your OPC I'd guess for a brand new one?

Thanks for the link. I rang that bloke and he doesn't have the one i need.It seems that the 2.7,3.2 and 3.4 engine sizes share the same gearbox ECU. It appears to have changed as the 3.6 uses a mercedes auto box.

Be careful - TCU are generally not swop and play - when you install a new one then it has to be coded correctly to the car and you have one opportunity as it cannot be recoded. I have tried this before with a second hand TCU and it has worked sometimes, and other times it has not.

It is very rare for the TCU to go wrong - I have seen it happen in the past but most tiptronic issues are related to 1) Incorrect levels in the box - which can be internal failure issue 2) Short in the wiring 3) Valve body issues.

If its the same as a 99/2000 model then you can download the wiring info from here ..

I can only assume you mean they have measured a voltage .. ie 12 volts but dont have an output ..

They would need to load test the wires as a volt meter will not show any high resistance .. so for a feed you would put a light bulb accross it and similar for an earth to prove there is no resistance in the wiring .

For the rest then its just a continuity check or you could load up every wire if needed .

Thank you for the link. I have e mailed the garage the link and printed off the relevant sections to drop in to him tomorrow. Hopefully he will be more enlightened once he has perused it all.

The car is ready for collection this morning from PCT. fifteen or sixteen weeks since the garage fitting the exhaust blew the gearbox ECU jump starting it. Just short of a three grand bill for valve bodies and ECU unit. Just short of four hundred from the gearbox specialist who could not fix it in twelve weeks. Just short of a hundred from the ECU testing specialist who pronounced there wears no fault on the ECU and three hundred for the garage who blew the ECU in the first place - no actual proof so no case in law- and I'm thoroughly tired of the car.
Think it will be for sale as soon as the first signs of Spring arrive. Not really even the cars fault. Just a joyless stressful fault which has taken away the desire to own it anymore.

So was the problem found and resolved by PCT or have they done other work?
Understand how you must feel about the car at the moment but I'm sure if you drive it and all is well you will change your mind👍

PCT found the problem/s and rectified them in the time scale they said they would. Their work and attitude as always was great. I will miss them when they're gone. It's had the electrical track the valve bodies live in,new connecting cable/ loom section and a gearbox ECU. Filter and gearbox oil change. Ran beautifully on my way home.
I look at it sat on the drive and fail to feel the same way about it.. ...it's been a huge stress. I bought a cheap two grand Alfa Gt to run stop doing in whilst it's been absent as my Alfa Spider of 28 years vintage isn't ideal for winter use. I have had more fun driving that and discovering its limits than I ever thought possible.

A harrowing experience and understandably a good reason to get shut come spring. These cars are getting on and side incidentals such as blowing the gearbox ECU from jump starting don't help the ownership experience.

Its fine and sorted for the tine being but if/when you get the next wallet opening experience, you'll wish you'd got rid of it earlier for someone else to dig into their wallet.

An Indy I know sees people spend silly money on their 996's and Boxsters versus their sale value - an emotions blackmail the car imposes on its owners!

Whatever you decide to do, I wish the experience is better for you next time around.
