Naive question maybe, but what does this actually involve?

I've always thought my rears looked fine but the fronts could do with sitting a bit wider. Bought some spacers but wasn't comfortable with the amount of stud in the nut so took them off again.

Gotcha, understand what you're saying now. Mine were 7mm slip on.
