Door seals - anyone replaced them?

Mine are frayed and flaky especially the area where shoes would hit on entry and exit.

I seem to recall them costing a fortune at OPC.

Does anyone know or have experience of an alternative and has anyone replaced theirs to say what the job entails?
Thanks.

I may end up replacing mine when I get round to it, but you're right IIRC there circa £320 a door.

Unsure if there are alternatives, I do recall someone replacing a small section of the seal with a new piece that was cut from a good seal.

I've got a new one fitted. Not cheap but make a nice visual improvement.

Genuine are handed and have stiffeners for the corners. I'd get a proper one if I were you.

Replacement is easy. They are bonded with impact adhesive (as per half the interior of the 993). Just pull them out and pull out as much old glue as you can.

Later rubbers have barbs on them and don't actually need the glue to stay put, but I still dabbed mine with some and got them fitted nicely as per Factory.

I get that the earlier rubbers fit, but they upgraded them for a reason.

Door seals

I have recent experience on this subject. My recently acquired 993 needed a new drivers side seal, worn away by careless feet getting in and out. I brought it to the attention of the dealer who sold me the car and he replaced it, with his trade discount the cost was £377.92 including vat.
Part number is 964 531 096 00 the nearside part number is 964 531 095 00

Apparently removing all the old seals' adhesive was a nightmare, the local Porsche specialist who the dealer used charged £162 to remove and fit the new one.

Agreed, but any brand new seal will be a huge improvement - regardless of any slight differences in the original design... 8)

I was genuinely surprised with the extra force needed to close the doors after I replaced mine - just goes to show how the seals get tired and lose their elasticity after 20 years or so.

That's nuts! With a bit of heat and or solvent they can be cleaned up pretty easily. The glue is only to hold it in place and doesn't form part of the seal. It's not essential to get it all off.

Smoke and mirrors. Can you tell on an inspection if a 993 has the correct seals or do the 964 ones show out :dont know:

Could the extra force be due to the slightly different profile of the new rubber?

I found a thread about the same topic with a similar conversation here

They show as not handed and don't have the contours a 993 seal has. Sure not a deal breaker but not 'correct' either

OR is this due to the fact you installed the wrong seals?, although it does make you think why there's such a gulf in price here :?:

Typical OPC pricing. Two similar products, priced miles apart.

:hand: You can't run a 993 on a shoestring as ownership implies you'll do your dough one way or the other.

I have to say it's remarkable that low mileage cars can suffer rubber wear over the threshold as drivers get in/out and may give some indication of type of use. Or they are admired regulalry from the drivers seat in the garage where door access is restricted

My 50k miler 993 had rubber flaking like a bad case of psorissis and some carpet wear where the previous owners sandals would rub :what: Where my 130k miler 964 is still on it's original rubber and virgo intacto
