Few questions regarding oil change

I am planning on changing on the oil on my 997 next week, it will be the first one since the engine re-build (done by Portiacraft) in December 2016 and the last one before the cars goes in to storage for the winter on 1st October.

One thing I will be doing is changing the drain plug to a magnetic version as a precaution in the future. Anyway, I know the general process but have a few questions:

1 - What oil? I have read a few posts and Nanodrive seems to tbe preferred choice? I had a quick chat with my Porsche specialist who recommended a Porsche approved Petronas oil which he uses, he said the Nanodrive is a good oil however for the 2000miles per year I do it wont really have any benefits over the Petronas. He uses Nanodrive in cars which are mainly used on track or heavy use in general. Any views on this?

2 - Oil amount, obviously this is done when the engine is cool and car on a flat ground but how much did you put in and in what increments? Should I start with 6litres and then check the level and work up from there using the cold engine and electronic gauge as a guide?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi and welcome.

If my car were to be stored for winter then, I'd change it next spring as the oil can and probably will get contaminated with moisture.

No big deal as it will burn off but why bother.

As for which oil? It's a personal thing I suppose but millers nano 10w50 is what it's mine.

Re filling is around 7 litres and start engine and warm it up then, switch it off and check level and top oil up :thumb:

Thanks for the reply.

I have been meaning to change the oil for a a couple of weeks now as its not been done since the re-build so I am a bit cautious plus last week I topped it up with some Mobil which I believe is different to whats in so I was looking to drop the oil and start a fresh. I will be starting the car every week and letting it warm up properly to temperature so fingers crossed that gets rid of any moisture.

So start with 7 litres on a cold engine then let it get up to temp, check the gauge and then top up from there?

There are a few choices for which type of oil. I'm sure any of the reputable fully synthetic oils you've mentioned will be fine

How much oil? Last time I did mine I measured the volume dropped then replaced same volume with fresh. Obviously I checked the level was good before starting the job. :thumb:

Oh, and I wouldn't bother with the starty stoppy every week. But that's another debate....

+ 1 starting the engine will cause moisture both internally and externally with the exhaust. Next thing you'll know is when the exhaust is blowing next tear :nooo:

Yes, 7 litres with a new filter then warm her up. Wait for the countdown and check level.

At this point it will start flashing low oil on the counter.

Just add 250mil at a time until it's ok :thumb:

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I will probably only use the car a few times before the tax runs out and its stored so I will hang fire until next March/April when its back on the road and do an oil change straight away.

Do you recommend starting the car at all over the winter or should I just leave it as is for the next 6 months?

Nah, I wouldn't bother. My procedure through the winter months is :-

60 psi in each tyre.
Keep battery on trickle charge. CTech.
Handbrake off.
Indoor cover.
Heated garage.

That's it!
