Just attempted to check brake fluid condition but don't seem to be able to remove the filter in top of reservoir is there some trick to this or am I being thick ??

Just twist it off..

Can be stuck though so the more smaller biceped amongst us may need to use an adjustable plumbers wrench on it to get enough 'purchase'..

I cant remember cause its late .. im tired .. but is there a filter under the cap once removed ?

I know there is on some models and it would stop you getting a tester into the resevoir .. if so its not really removable but a bit of levering with a screwdriver would probably do it.

Personnely i would just say a brake fluid change should be done every 2 years ..

Also seeing as i nearly fell asleep writeing this im off .. laters :D
