987.1 Boxster-S 3.2 - gear selection / clutch problem ??

Hi all,

I'm after a bit of advice / help with diagnosing a fault before I throw my Boxster at a garage.

When the car is running and has warmed up (after 10 to 15mins driving) the gearbox becomes increasingly notchy and hard to get into gear (to the point where it's impossible to push the gearstick into position).

There's no grinding or jumping out of gear, it just won't physically go in.

It does not seem to effect changing out of gear into neutral.

It effects all the gears

It seems fine when the car is cold.

The problem does not occur when the Engine is off (even if it's still warm). I think this means that it's not the Gear selector cables at fault (please feel free to correct me).

The Clutch pedal doesn't feel any different to me, there are no apparent leaks and the clutch fluid is nice and full.

This has come on pretty suddenly.
It was completely fine commuting on Friday, didn't drive on Saturday and then on Sunday I ended up on the side of the road after 20 minutes

The car has done just over 70k and I have no evidence that it has had any clutch or gearbox work done to it.

My local semi-specialist garage don't seem keen on playing hunt the problem. So I really want to be able to tell them what I want replaced.

Please let me know what you guys think?

Thanks,
Dan

A couple of things spring to mind ..

You want new cables , heat is expanding the inner core faster than the outer so it jams .

Clutch drag .. oil is getting onto the clutch friction plate , this will cause the box input shaft to still rotate causeing difficult gear selection when the engine is running .. unusual fault but possible .

You want a gearbox strip and rebuild .

On a tip theres a couple of other things it can be .

My money is on the cables or clutch drag .. cables usually just break .

Hard to go any further without looking at the car im afraid .
