Windscreen scratches

Hi there,

Newbie here having been a long time lurker. I bought a 997.2 C4 recently and noticed that a previous owner had left it too long replacing the wiper blades and now I have loads of scratches along the whole arc of the wiper blade swipe and to make matters worse I used a car wash today and they managed the put three massive scratches on the windscreen right in my line of vision.
I haven't had to claim for windscreen damage on my Insurance before so my questions are a) will I be entitled to a replacement windscreen with scratches only? b) would a claim for a replacement windscreen affect my premium next year? c) could damage like this be smart repaired?

And finally could you please recommend a good repair kit for one of the heated elements on my rear window?

Many thanks, Dean.

I'd be very surprised if an Insurance company would authorise a replacement windscreen just because it is scratched. A professional detailer or glass repair specialist should be able to polish most of them out.

If they did allow a claim it shouldn't affect your no claims bonus nor your renewal premium.

Good Luck

I spoke to the local autoglass bloke a while back about mine seriously scratched. He told me to call the Insurance and say is was chipped and when they send him round he would 'confirm' it needed replacing and fit a new one. Just need to make sure the window fitter is reading from your hymn sheet.

He also told me it wouldn't polish out as it was too deep and to get it out would leave an impression on the glass {like a ripple).

I had one replaced due to scratches and very fine chips from year of tiny marks and the Insurance company were fine with that, I told them at night the screen glares with oncoming headlights, £60 later I had a new screen.
They wouldn't want you having a crash when you had told them the screen was defective and they decided not to replace the screen.

If there is a doubt about them replacing it because of scratches then a crack is easy to induce......

on the subject of defrauding the Insurance company - it could be argued that the insurers are committing fraud against the customer by allowing the windscreen replacement price scam to continue - the margins on screens are horrendously high - a price finally paid by the motorist of course.

Are 911 screens any different because I've had two now and both have had millions of tiny pockmarks and some scratches. I assumed it was coincidence but there seems to be a theme here. But glass is glass, right?

CAR WASH??????!!!!!!!! :nooo: :nooo: :nooo: :nooo: :nooo:

I'd be willing to bet there are not too many owners on here that put there car through a car wash??!!

Yea or nae?

Nae from moi.

I claimed for a new screen on my previous car. Although that got a massive crack in it from stonechip as I drove it home from the dealer id just bought it from. Doh. Insurance excess was £75 and I had to push for a genuine manufacturer screen rather than a generic replacement. Didnt affect my premium the following year.

My 997 got a stone chip in the screen last week. So anoying. So now I will have to check what my current insurer`s policy is and whether it can be fixed.

I accept that I am a little obsessed, but the only person I let clean my car is me!
