Hi couple of questions -
1/ do you need the fob or can you have a service that doesn't use it?
2/ VF can't connect to it properly - having just contacted my OPC they have said they need to hard reset it. I asked if it was under warranty and they said possibley. Depends if there is any damage caused by owners etc
3/ if it needs a new internal battery would this be warranty cover?

I ask as given they said they can't tell me if it's covered until they find the fault I could be in for a bill for a service that I then have to remember to have a fob with me which doesn't look like it attaches to the keys!

I may just go aftermarket and ditch them!

I,m a little confused here ..

Have you just bought the car ?

The VTS is Porsches system with the black fob which wont connect to the keys as its not supposed to , it has to be kept seperate in case of theft .

Whats VF ? if you mean Cobra that runs the system then it will depend on how long the unit has been deactivated for.

It works off of a sim card , if the unit has not been used in years then there is a good chance the phone number for the sim has been reused or deleted and so it will never work .. its a new unit in that case.

A hard reset just means pulling a couple of fuses , you could remove the unit and disconnect the internal battery as well but on the 997 that wasnt a fix that made any difference .. later cars it did though .

Warrenty ? i very much doubt it but you never know .. depends which way the wind is blowing !

Yeah just bought the car.
Have one fob.
The sim is active but the car isn't sending any messages back to Vodafone (VF - who now manage the service)

So if likelihood is cost for a system where I need to remember a fob (which I will forget quite frequently!) I will likely go aftermarket.

Aghh ok .. ive been out of the network for a few years .. it was Cobra then ..

A hard reset would be the first thing to do , but ive had little success with that over the years , worth trying though as you never know .

Im sure there are cheaper alternatives but either way if your not useing it then the immobiliser side needs removing from the VTS .. had one in the other day that wouldn,t start and it was a VTS that had activated after a flat battery .

Any Porsche specialist can do that for you .

Previous owner never activated it so it's been off for a year.
I'll call Porsche again tomorrow - if they can't give me some confidence it's covered under warranty I'm going to cancel and go for a tracker monitor or similar.

Having said that - I now think that another tracker will void my remaining 18month OPC warranty.
I think they may have me by the b***s on this one..

Aww yes .. goodpoint ..

Ill give you a tip though .. if they cant see its fitted and for anything security related then they wouldn,t be able to then they cant fail it on a 111 check or refuse anything on warrenty unless this was a direct cause of it ... but dont tell anyone this

Do you want the VTS for you or for your Insurance company. My Insurance money said it didn't make a difference to my premium whether it was connected or not

If the car has OPC warranty the tracker should be covered.

Like others yours will now probably be knackerd however Porsche should replace it free of charge.

Haven't bothered checked during the past 3 years whether mine works or not.

You'd think - but it will cost me circa 350-450 to find out I guess which is the labour to get to it and diagnose it...

Finding non tracker Insurance is also proving painful!!!!

The only vehicles that have had to fit trackers for Insurance was a new Aston Martin V8 Vantage and a Ducati Desmosedici RR.

Could it be related to your postcode?

I had to activate my tracker- Insurance said it was due to the fact it was an agreed value policy.

Op - my tracker took 10 days to wake up, I thought it was faulty but then started working. My final attempt at getting it working consisted of removing the battery overnight. Started working after that....

Yes, to the last comment.
When I bought my 2010 MY Carrera 997 Gen 2 it came with two fobs, (which can be of course switched on and off themselves).
My initial attempt to get Vodafone to talk to the car failed, so took it on their advise to my local OPC, who checked it out in cooperation, online, with the tech people at Vodafone - result was the unit was declared to be dead and needed replacing. Cost to me so far from OPC was zero, which I was pleased with, but faced a huge bill for a new unit or a possible doubtful warranty claim.
My logic said that it was unlikely such a unit would die so decided to have one more go, and spoke to the top tech guy at my OPC, who it seemed was not involved on my first visit to them.
He asked me to let him have the car overnight, which I did. He shut the car down overnight, and in the morning "bingo" the unit woke up, vodafone talked to it and it works brilliantly.
I just have to remember not to drive out to often (did it a few times in the last year) without an active fob or """""""""".
