Still having tiptronic limp mode problems

After suffering from a flat battery - now replaced with a brand new one- and having had a new exhaust fitted and the handbrake shoes replaced for the fresh MOT my 996 tiptronic came back to me with a big problem. I am still unsure if this is a garage induced issue or a dead battery induced issue?
the car is in a limp home mode stuck in second gear or reverse with a big red worded warning and the dash gear selector light alternating between P and 4. i refitted the new battery and no luck getting rid of the warning issue. I disconnected the battery for five mins and tried again, still no change. I took the car for a run around our area- in second gear- but you can't go far like that.
Please any other ideas to clear my warning light or indeed fix an issue if it has one? Thanks, john.

I answered your other post but didnt see this ..

When you turn the ignition on but do not start it then is it in limp home mode ? ie you get a warning message .. or is it only when you start the car ?

I really need the fault code thats generated to do much im afraid .

Ive worked on a similar problem last week but that was a .. er .. mistake when jump starting shall we say and the similar fault to yours was there only when the car was started not with just the ignition turned on .. im kinda hopeing you say its there all the time in this case .

The car still has the tiptronic warning on the dash and is still stuck in limp home mode. I don't think i was that clear? Does the ignition on not starting it clear a fault light please?

Turning the ignition on and off will not clear a fault code .. it may stop the problem if its intermitant or not there but a code will remain untill its cleared useing a tester .

A code is just a log of a problem the car has encountered or is an actual present fault .

You seem to have a permanent fault .

When you put the key in the ignition and turn it so the dash lights are all on but don't start the car the red light is still next to the P for park letter on the dash centre. Once you start the car the Tiptronic emergency run warning lights up on the dash. Tried the turn key press throttle and wait thirty seconds a couple of times but no change?
I have a cheap generic code reader from Amazon but i never tried plugging it in before. I assumed it would require a more sophisticated device to read the codes?

I am concerned that the garage may have created a fault but I'm not one to make that accusation without some evidence. The battery dying causing the fault as the garage told me does seem a reasonable scenario on face value but i have no clue if its true or possible or indeed how i go about rectifying it without being stung for big money by a porsche specialist?

Ok .. just to clarifiy things ..

when driveing the car the light for gear selection flashes between 1 and P i think it is and a warning for tiptronic fault comes up ..

If you lock the car unlock it and turn the ignition on but Dont start it you get no warning at all untill the car is started and the light stays on P ?

If you can connect the fault code reader you have and go into tiptronic and then fault memopry it will help .

As you described I can open the car,put the key in the ignition turn it to light the dash up but not start it and I get a red light lighting up the P for park symbol on the gear selected dash section. Start the car and the little red light starts to flash between the P symbol and number 4 gear symbol and the tiptronic warning appears in writing on the dash. Car is locked to either reverse or gear 2 and the selection of either is much chunkier / fiercer than normal. My code reader was twelve quid I don't think it has a tiptronic section? It just gets a code number.

If you can get a code number then thats great , without a code number then i will be guessing .. and as my guess is a bit expensive then id rather have a code first .. im also guessing as you mentioned voltage supply in a previous post and thats what the Pdf relates to .

That makes a lot of sense Thankyou. I will get myself a better code reader and discover the logged fault number. Be tomorrow before I can get one. Thankyou for the input. It is becoming frustrating now as I had planned to be away for the week Monday in it......

Thanks for that. I will take a trip to the motor factors tomorrow and see if they have a code reader that works on the car.

I got the code reader to work this afternoon and it has a fault. Ode showing. The number is
P1702 P. N/A01/01
I cleared the code but the fault predictably remained. Does that give any clearer a clue as to my issue please? Thanks John.

Yes it does .. its the code i posted a test plan for a few posts back .

The tiptronic control unit is not getting a voltage return from the valves in the gearbox when it should , it will either be a wiring fault or a tiptronic control unit fault .

You need to download the pdf and follow that test plan carefully , if all the wiring checks out on the test then its a new Tiptronic control unit im afraid ..

My early 996 with the ZF gearbox had the same symptoms, The tiptronic control unit is external to the gearbox and fits on the spindle which is controlled by the gear shift cable, anyway mine was riveted together with aluminium rivets which had corroded and the unit had opened, I took it off opened it, cleaned it and put it back together with screws and it was fine. Or you could put a new one on. Either way it's quite an easy DIY job. If its a later car with a merc box I have no experience of these.

Vi am pretty sure it's a Mercedes box. I had the box filters and fluids changed just after I got the car and I recall the guy at the garage telling me it was a Mercedes unit.
Would this control box for the tiptronic that is on the outside of the gearbox be succeptible to,damage whilst the garage were working on the underside replacing my exhaust? I am becoming more and more convinvced that the garage caused my problem. The car has run beautifully glitch free since I bought it and the coincidence is just too much.
I will download the plan of action and this information and return the car to them next week I think. Thanks , John.
