2nd gear "pop out problem". Fixed !!

Hi, so I had the dreaded 2nd gear pop out problem occurring almost every time I drove the car, usually happens on the overrun and when cold. Didn't like the idea (cost actually) of a gearbox rebuild so thought I would try the upgraded detente solution as advertised by G-box and made stateside, guess what it works, my indie fitted it in under an hour, happy days!!, I would certainly say give it a go if you suffer the same problem.

I managed to find one on eBay in Glasgow, it was up for £195 but I got it for a best offer price of £167.50, my guy charged £40 for the hour to fit.

That kit masks an underlying problem and does not fix it correctly, according to some.
There is a thread about it somewhere on here...

Talk to Mike at Sports & Classic and he is of the view it "overthrows" the gear putting more pressure on the other gears. Long term this could lead to needing other new gears on the mainshaft - leaving to a gearbox strip and rebuild with more parts required = more expensive solution.

There is a thread on this from Mike.

The GBox detente can work if caught early but is unlikely to work if there is crunching on 2nd gear from pop out that has been ignored.

Indys differ on their view of this detente spring solution.

Yes I have read that on a couple of other forums, funny though no stories of huge failures after this hopeful fix. To be honest just happy the pop out has gone away for now.

Resurrecting an old thread, I'm just starting to have the same issues, and will be ordering one of these.

How's it going now a year on?

I've got one of these detents that I fitted, then removed a month later as I changed my mind. If you're interested, drop me a PM.

The only solution for pop-out is a new synchro and that needs a gearbox strip and rebuild. It is caused by damage to the dog teeth. The detent just adds more pressure to keep the damaged dog teeth engaged and creates an overthrow on all the gears on the shaft. There is no long term data on the GBox detent spring. Some indys fit them some will not fit it because it doesn't address the cause - worn/damaged dog teeth.

Its a bit like if your hip joint keeps popping out of its socket, you wrap a strong rope tight around the top of the leg and the hip to keep pressure on the joint to stop it coming out of the socket in the hip! The only solution is a replacement hip joint due to wear on the ball and socket not slack muscles.

The 2nd gear synchro price for parts has been rising over the years from Porsche (the only source for replacement part). I think the synchro is around £1k. With labour the strip and rebuild will be around £3.5k - £4.5k depending on labour rates and assuming no other parts or bushes are required.

It's the only long term sustainable solution to the problem.

The Gbox detent has been sold for about 10 years at least, as far as I know. And I'm yet to come across a story about it having been the cause of a problem. Rebuilding the gearbox would be a better solution, but if just changing the detent delays the need for that, then what's the problem?

There is a view among some gearbox specialists that it creates a bigger more costly rebuild down the line.

Much of GBox sales (the manufacturer of the detent spring) are in the US and the data does not exist on long term outcomes. Its possible that cars with it are moved every few years so we never know what repair had to be done down the line.

Its down to personal choice how one approaches the pop-out problem.
Perhaps worth asking some reputable indys who do a lot of gearbox repairs for their view and then you have all the information to decide.

Just saying, a rebuild isn't necessarily the only solution. Plenty of people report good outcomes with Gbox over the last 10 years. And still never read a report of one making it worse. Just comments from people without direct experience suggesting that a gearbox rebuilder has told them they're not great. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that the gearbox rebuilder is impartial.....

Thanks all for the responses. I've spent a big chunk of money on the 4S this year: double din stereo upgrade; new clutch; water pump; service; tyres; discs and pads; new exhaust in the next couple of months. Just can't stomach a gearbox rebuild this year.

Understandable after all that expense! A gearbox strip and rebuild is going to be in a similar ball-park spend. Looks like its the GBox solution until you can stomach the rebuild.

And this would bother them why? :?: Ah, because they can't charge you for the (more expensive) rebuild now...
