Scuttle shake on a cab

Hi all, I've not been on here since selling my 99 c4 coupe about a year ago, I'm thinking about getting back into one and cab prices look reasonable at the moment, I've never been in a 996 cab and wondered if there is any degree of scuttle shake as I have felt in two other manufacturers versions of their 4 seater cabs, no matter how slight, I feel I couldn't live with it after driving a rigid box version,

I haven't really noticed scuttle shake...
The roof rattles and creaks so much it's difficult to notice much else

^^The coupe is the car you buy for other people, the cab you buy for yourself, as such you need to be happy with it as the validation of others is going to be absent. Therefore, go and drive a few- that's the only thing that'll tell you if you are happy or not. Get the roof down, give it the beans, look in the mirror and see what your expression is.

I've owned 3 4-seater cabs in my time. The first 2 experienced the usual twist, roll, scuttle shake, etc. common in cabs. When I purchased my 996 I expected the same. Totally not. Different experience all together. The car just feels rock solid in the bends and over uneven surfaces and just feels like it's on rails.

It's easy enough to go for a test drive and find out for yourself as it's something you just easily notice at the first bend. Everytime anyone gets in the car with me, they comment when I go round a bend how level the car stays and just how smooth it is.

The Targa is also a cab with a roof welded on and I would suspect that model would have the same handling issues. May want to ask a Targa owner (like infrasilver) who tracks their's what they think of the handling, etc.

:yeah:

They are brilliant vehicles and pretty much the ultimate cabrio.

Yeah that sounds good, i would'nt expect pln sharp handling but i couldn't live with something that felt floppy when you drive over a drain cover

You'll be surprised at how solid it feels.

I have had my C2 cab for two weeks now and it is the most solid car I've ever driven, corners like it's on rails and no rattles. Top down, at 70mph, knowing you have another 100mph+ on tap - massive grin factor :D :D

No such worries as scuttle shake..... Feels like it's built from a block of granite with the precision of a Swiss watch :thumb:

Don't get put off by the guys who would only ever have a coupe - get what you want. When I was buying I had never experienced a cab..... Got one and now I am really really glad I did- definitely feel good therapy with the roof down and nice weather

TBH, All I ever wanted was a Cab and I was marginally prepared for a bit of 'flex' having been in and driven various cabs (non Porsche) over the years.
What a pleasnat surprise to drive the 996!
Go and drive few yourself - they really are a revelation and, according to the original literature are pretty much as rigid as the coupe.
The extra benefit becomes apparent with the top down, when you really are immersed in the whole experience - at speed the feeling is like that you experience on a bike, but more secure.
I know there are some who prefer a Coupe, but go for what your heart wants
Really love mine (you might be able to tell :D )

My old Ford Escort 1.6i cab used to twist, my C4S does not. I have a slight rattle coming from somewhere near the rear quarter window but I'm to lazy to find it, I suspect it's a window regulator as it only happens when the roof and glass is down.

Thumbs up to the above post about being carved from granite, - very solid vehicle. :thumb:

Hey keep it quiet lads - they'll all want one.........unless this means values of cabs will increase. :)

Torsional rigidity of the 996 turbo cab (and therefore also C4S?) is 11,600 Nm/degree.

To put that into some context the 964 Coupe has a figure of 11,500 Nm/degree.

Thought I'd try to put the figures in one place (gathered rom Pelican, Rennlist etc, all to be taken with pinch of salt):

'88 911 7000 nm/deg (measurement by burgermeister)
964 11500 nm/deg (993 was 20% stiffer)
993 13900 nm/deg (996 was 45% stiffer)
996.1 20120 nm/deg (Excellence was Expected p.1381)
996.2 25,100 Nm/degree
996 turbo 27,000
996 turbo cab 11,600
997 33000 nm/deg
991 40000 nm/deg (porsche used 20% torsionally stiffer as a design target, has claimed "up to 25% stiffer")
